Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you don't have an old autoscan you might need to do a bit of trial and error to find the correct ABS coding. Luckily it's not an MK60EC1 which has a much more complicated coding scheme.
If you don't have a copy of your original ABS coding try searching online for one from a similarly equipped car.
Thanks for the guidance mate. I'll have to check my old laptop but unfortunately I'm not holding my breath I'll find an autoscan inclusive of coding. And if I understand you correctly a "similarly equipped car" would need to be a local model not an o/s one?

I'm also wondering, given the current faults, if it's safe to use the vehicle as there aren't any MIL active? I mean, if I didn't have VCDS I'd none wiser that there is anything wrong with the vehicle.

Wouldn't necessarily need to be local. Just same engine etc.
If you have no mil on then you're pretty much right to go. But you should be fault free.
That brake booster fault COULD mean that in an emergency braking situation the abs might not behave as designed.

Autoscan has the coding for all modules.

Could there still be a real mechanical problem with Brake Boost Vacuum System?
Since I o/hauled the right caliper and bled all the wheels I was cautioned about pressing the brake pedal too far (during the procedure) to the floor as this can damage the brake master cylinder seals. The thought here apparently is because normal brake pedal travel (with brake boost) is relatively short pressing the pedal all the way to the floor can distort the seals.

Sure it's possible but you will get that fault if abs is not correctly coded for the car config.
Confirm the coding is correct first then if you can't clear the fault maybe that's happened but you'd be unlucky

Ok, if I find the old autoscans I'll post asap.

Copy your abs coding back from that scan.
                    That's what it should be.

Yes, I can see the original ABS coding differs from the current one. Do you mean in VCDS go ABS, coding, etc, etc and change just the coding to the previous one being Coding: 0046535?

                        Correct.
Then clear faults and check if you have anything left.

Sounds pretty straight forward kamold, I shall try this over the coming weekend and report back. Hope one day this post might be of some help to another dedicated VW Passat owner. Now, approaching 318K km ... only 182K km to target mileage.

But ... in the mean time I still have to learn the best way to get the 1 piece manifold off to replace the broken PCV valve membrane.

So, it took a while ... but today I've recoded the ABS with the "old" code. Sure enough - it worked. No more ABS fault codes of any kind. I've still got that annoying fault code to do with radio head unit but that ought to be a subject of another post.
