After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Anyone knowledgeable with Bi Xenon's? Need help R36

Hi guys, I have decided I will be working on a project to retrofit factory Bi Xenon's to my B6 Passat.

I have purchased the factory Bi Xenon housings for this project, these did not come with Ballasts. I splurged on new housings to ensure the light cut off etc will be acceptable (no blinding). I am also in the process of investigating the washing function to have this fitted as well (I have micro scratches on the windscreen and I'm sick of getting blinded).

My question is: I have a wrecked Bi Xenon housing from an R36 Passat. This has what appears to be two ballasts??? Can anyone shed light on this? Are they both acting as ballasts for the Xenons or is one of the silver boxes for a different function (cornering lights etc).

Does anyone have a bit more technical information on the factory bi xenon setup of an R36 Passat that can share some wisdom?

I have searched and found some useful threads but unfortunately the photos of them are no longer appearing losing much of their value. I plan on doing a nice write up for this to add value back into the various forums that help.

    Thanks again.

By all means, take pictures and post them. I'm happy to take a few photos of the Xenon's in my R36 if that helps.

You will need the ballasts, afs controllers possiblity. bi xenon control module, headlight washers, new front bar, self mechanicals mounted down the back etc to become legal.

Cheers for your reply. I don't believe I will need a new front bar for this..

I am however interested in the function of the "Bi Xenon Control Module" as its not something I have come across yet in my research. This might explain the function of the second 'ballast' looking silver module attached to the headlights. I will post pictures of this shortly

You will to put washers in which are needed to make them legal despite what all the ones in the aftermarket crap thread have or have not done.

                Thanks for your response.

I won't start the legality discussion in this thread as it has been discussed many times and I am well aware of what is required from a legality point of view. Hence why I have payed for brand new Bi Xenon housings to start this project right as opposed to running aftermarket in halogen projectors. The plan is using VAGCOM to enable Bi Xenon with shutter and disable AFS / cornering as the initial install, and work my way up from there as I acquire parts.

Anyone who has actually done some work with OEM Bi Xenon housings + Ballasts please chime in..

The specific reason behind this thread is to gather further information on enabling basic functionality of the Bi Xenon unit used in Passats. More specifically - identifying the two modules attached to the lights themselves seen in the pictures below (are both the items pictures 'ballasts'? if not what is the function of the other). I greatly appreciate responses that can add value to this.

Are these two modules the ballast? Or is one the ballast and the other some other function (please see pictures)

Passat R36! thanks for your reply. I was a bit confused as I expected only one ballast as you mentioned.

However Pic 3's cover says D1S 35W on it so I was thinking it might be something that is required in the function of the ballast???

Can anyone ID what is shown in Pic 3?

D1S 35w stands for a 35watt bulb with a D1S fitting. Obviously that is where the bulb lives in behind that cover but i am not an expert on this so dont hold me to it

Yep thats why I was thinking it is some sort of assisting module to the ballast.

Ill hold out for some one who has had to replace a ballast or mucked around with the lights to clarify this!

as said, the VW repair manual says the ballast behind the big cover...
why don't you open both covers to have a look?
