Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just to clarify guys so far its only the PD unit injectors, not Common rail.
    Cheers

Thankfully I have a Common Rail Diesel (CR)...Engine Code CBBB.

Maybe to save any future confusion with people viewing these pages for the first time; anyone with problem engines could possibly add the Engine Code and the fact that it is a Pump Duse Diesel (PD) engine.

    Possible PD Engine Codes include the following;
    - 103kw (Golf, Jetta, Passat) (BKP, BMA, BMP)
    - 125kw (Golf GT, Passat) (BMR, BUZ, BWV) and obviously other vehicles in the VAG range.

If any of the above info is incorrect, please amend as required.

I truly hope all affected get rectified ASAP!!!

Well hate to pop the CR bubble, but it seems your High Pressure Fuel Pump is starting to fail left and right in the USA, hop on TDIclub and read the tales of woe. At least you guys can run good fuel and use lubricating additives, not much you can do about insulation in injectors that fail.

John Hughes' VW in Perth, know all about this issue, said they would replace all 4i injectors and wiring loom...thank God! The service advisor told me that these seem to always go at around 60K.
Will also fix the broken electric handbrake (also died this month) and do 60K service $250 cheaper than my usual dealer. Let's be hopeful that they keep their word on this!

          Joining the queue...

Another TDI fail tale: engine cut out without warning, flashing coil light and MDI service warning. Luckily I managed to roll into a side street before coming to a complete halt. Roadside unable to help, towed to Gerald Slaven in Belconnen Canberra. They had the car for 2 full days, and told me it was a flat battery (WTF!?) - despite the fact I told them I operated lights, radio, and the ignition for hours after the breakdown. Drove the car home. Next morning would not start and the coil light + MDI service warning were back on. Thank you Gerald Slaven.

I've only had the car 1 month. It has VW warranty until April and lease co warranty after that, so I was not immediately concerned about cost but definitely spooked and wondering if the car was a lemon. Fortunately this forum has given me the info that Gerald Slaven failed to provide. The car just clocked 60k, so its age + symptoms strongly suggest injectors to be the fault. I'll get it towed to Lennock in Phillip and request a full injector inspection/replacement. Really hoping I can get this issue sorted as I've been loving the ride.

Update: The car was towed to Lennock late in the afternoon. They called me after lunch the following day with a full update - injectors need to be replaced. They said that there is an official VW notice describing the symptoms and correct way to diagnose and repair. Lennock have been incredibly professional and hope to have the car back by Friday/Monday. I have to wonder how Slaven could have ignored such an obvious and serious issue.

Glad to hear that Greg. My Passat (2008 AND 60k) is likely to be in for a while longer as there as a number of ECM faults apart from the failed injectors that must be checked fully. All along John Hughes VW have said they will replace both wiring loom and all injectors. They have told me they'll provide a free loan car if this goes on for more than a week as parts availability could be an issue!
Sounds like the other dealer in your case needs to read some tech bulletins as this issue must be known to them all.
I will be writing to VWA requesting recompense for the 7 days car hire so far.

Having the car just fail is really ominous, so it's a bit of a relief to have the issue identified. Lennock are strapped for courtesy cars atm so I'll have to pursue it with vw if I need a rental. Looking at previous posts on this thread, vw has helped w hire costs. Good luck chasing it up.

A great idea Miro, and exactly what I was thinking of doing. Do you want to keep this just VWW / Australia as I am talking with several other forums about this and the general thought is a combined effort to make the issue public to inform both owners and potential purchasers worldwide. I know the owner of one of the major Aussie car sites, and they are open to doing a press release if we can prove some reasonable numbers.

It is better to keep it separately with added links to any forum that wish to link it. The reason behind is that every market is a ...little bit different.

Hmmm I'm nearly out of warranty now...
                        Should I get extended warranty
or just sell the damn thing?

I have to admit I've had the same thoughts recently, but I do so love my car, and had always planned to keep it, and if I went back to a petrol car, well, who would champion the oilers??

I have had an informal chat with a mystery caller from VW, and it would seem nothing is going to change as far as he is aware, but things could be in discussions above him. They are very much aware of the problem though, and the talk on the forums. Sorry I can't elaborate, and there's reasons for this ( the brief call being the main one! ), but the situation seems to remain, if you don't have a full VW warranty and service record, you're most likely to end up with the bill. I am in that boat too.

I am determined to get to the bottom of it, and am planning on taking the next lot of school holidays off work and pulling out the loom and injectors, and in the meantime I'm scouring the world to find any info, tips or potential solutions. I've even written to Siemens directly, so be interesting to see if they can tell us what the plan is for these injectors. I'd like to think I can send my injectors over to the UK company to see if they can upgrade them, if it is indeed an upgrade. Just waiting to hear back from my brother in Bedford UK who I've asked to call them.

I have to agree with Greg, this is a fantastic car with a known flaw that has dulled its lustre, but in the main this has been the best car I have owned over 27 years. I have a gutless Corolla hire car at the moment, horrible slushbox, crap economy and couldn't pull skin off custard! Once I get it back I will start calling the dealers for extended warranty quotes as I do intend to keep the Passat for at least 2 more years.
I only hope that VWA see sense and go the recall route, or they could lose significant future sales as we are intelligent consumers, who research our cars, and will keep away if we don't see action.
My only concern is what could replace the Passat if I feel they don't deserve my repeat business? I am a diesel convert, so I won't go back to volatiles....
