hand brake or park brake either way who needs it.

who uses a park brake? not me- i reckon its a complete waste of time if the car is in P. havent sheared a pin yet either!

Yeah, I just love parking on a slope without the handbrake, such that when you try to put the car into R or D, you have to wrench the lever and hear a god-almighty clunk from the drivetrain. That just does the drivetrain the world of good.....even if it doesn't shear a pin.

I have mechanical sympathy for my vehicles, and always use the handbrake (even when I visit Canberra or Tassie )

If I lived where it does get cold, the practise would be adapted to avoid locked on brakes, since that falls into the classification of "mechanical sympathy when it's very cold".
