    Quick update.

    After a short drive at last Friday's 45,000 service, the mechanic agreed that the car's behaviour was not within normal parameters - "jerky", in one word.

    Since the unit had been reset at the last service (which seemed to help for a while), there was now a case to replace the unit.

    VW Sydney was contacted, the new unit is on order and will be put in as soon as it arrives. Timeframe not clear at this stage.

    Took a while to sort it out but that's obviously my "patience" rather than a dealer/VW issue.

    Can't wait to get a "new car".

      Just a postive report for Kloster VW in Newcastle.

      Brought up the jerky DSG issue at the 30k service. On picking up the car the head service guy confirms mechatronics needs replacing and it's getting done today! Can't fault the service and pleasantly surprised I didn't get the run around like many others here.

            Thanks for the info, slotmachine.

            2 weeks sounds reasonable, looks like there is stock in the region and no need to ship from Europe.

            Would appreciate if you could report on the difference it makes to the driving - yes, I've seen reports (all positive) but always keen to hear more positive news!!

            P.S.: Couldn't see any info regarding your car ...

                Similar Issues

                Thought i'd throw my hat in the ring...

                I have an '06 V6 Passat with @40000km. I have been reporting a 'clunk' from the rear end when changing from 4th to 5th gear.

                Barloworld Mascot reported the issue back to HQ, and straight away they authorised replacement of the mechatronics unit.

                Now this is a first for me. I thought they would try and make me wear it, as it was only a subtle thud on 4th-5th gear changes. After all, this is a car maker who refuses to warrant creaks and squeaks in the cabins of its vehicles.

                It looks like these DSG's might have a few flaws that are only now becoming apparent - namely, longevity concerns. DSG is a new and therefore untested technology long term, so it will be interesting to see how big an issue this becomes.

                Unfortunately, the replacement of my mech unit did not solve my problem, so it has gone back in and I am now told a software update has fixed the problem. I will report further after a get my car back.

                On reflection, and after driving loan cars with DSG, i have concluded that my DSG is not as smooth any more as it used to be. Gear changes when the car is cold are harsh, in D the thing gets even more confused than it used to on gear choices, and coming to a smooth stop is more difficult (the drivetrain seems to remain engaged too long resulting in a lurch forward as the clutch goes in at about walking pace just before coming to a halt). I reported all this to the dealer and they tell me the software update has fixed it all. Hmmm...

                Has anyone else had a software update to their DSG? Its not a re-set but a new program, I'm told.

                  Have you looked at your instantaneous fuel consumption when this happens ?

                  I'm thinking you might be getting an unpleasant interaction between the fuel injectors switching from deceleration mode (zero fuel being injected) to idle mode (small amount of fuel) at about the same time the DSG decides to it is time to disengage the clutch to prevent the engine from stalling. I sometimes get this in both my (manual gearbox) vehicles when pulling up gently if I get my clutch timing wrong.

                    Mechatronics unit replaced, feels like a new car.
                    Taking off from lights and (especially) reversing at slow speeds is smooth as a baby bottom. I remember why I bought the car now!

                      Greg, so how do i fix that?

                      Slotmachine, good to hear a new mech unit helps some.

                      My car should be ready today - will post my findings on the 'software update'...

                        That's what I wanted to hear, slotmachine.

                        Don't know when my new unit arrives but anticipation level is high.

                        Regards,

                          Best of luck.

                          Again, can't speak highly enough of Kloster VW (newcastle). Has completely changed my opinion of dealer servicing (for the better).

                            DSG Software Update will be a recall.

                            Got my car back, and it is a lot better. Not perfect, but all but fixed.

                            It looks like the software update and the new Mech unit have made everything smoother, like when it was new.

                            I was told by Barloworld Mascot service that this software will shortly be a recall for DSG's. Don't know if its for all DSG's or just some models.

                              New mechatronic is going in even as I'm writing this.

                              Had a good run to work in Bundoora from Moonee Ponds after dropping off the car (didn't have a loaner - short notice - and I need the kms!).

                              Will report on the difference in behaviour soon.

                                First impression: Very nice.

                                Still not as smooth as you can be with an actual clutch but no comparison with "before". My neck is fine, and believe me, I spent a fair bit of time in stop-go traffic on the way home. Excellent.

                                Work done:
                                1) drained DSG oil;
                                2) removed "failed" mechatronics unit;
                                3) fitted new mechatronics unit;
                                4) adjusted DSG oil level.

                                I've heard that a change of oil does improve DSG operation as well so there's a couple of factors.

                                Anyway, very happy, can't wait to do some more driving tomorrow.
