Just signed the contract on my sedan - satnav, sunroof, paint and tinting - well below 70 drive-away! In shopping around I could save 4-5k.
YOu forgot to mention the model - assume TDi, and you got ripped off blind!!!
Only kidding
Confirmed Global Warming Sceptic. No Longer a VW Owner -Loving my new 2011 Range Rover Sport - bought as VW unable to provide info on the new Toureg despite it being released overseas 12 mths ago. 2008 R36 Wagon, 2006 GTI and 2004 R32 - Gone. Sorry VW, you make great cars but until you improve your customers' experiences you will lose customers
Paint? Metalic paint is NOT an optional extra on an R36. It's included in the price. Which is why on a white R36 you get a Sunroof standard since white is not metalic paint. Some dodgy stealers still try to charge white buyers for the sunroof though which is just down right LOW! And "well below $70k" is a lot more than $4k - $5k off to me. $4k - $5k makes no difference to me when I buy a car. Still, anything sub $70k drive away for an R36 is a decent price.

Just wondering then...
My invoice says:
Vehicle Price $58 142
So add GST and it becomes $63 956
Because I chose candy white, there is no charge for metallic paint listed. However it does list a charge for sunroof of $1818.18 (ex GST) ie. $1999.99 or $2k for the sunroof with GST.
Is the metallic paint worth $1818 ($2k with GST) or so then? I'm wondering whether I'm paying metallic paint price and the sunroof in this....
EDIT: From a Passat price list dated February 2009
Passat R36 Sedan 6 Speed DSG $65,990
And in the options section:
Metallic / Pearl Effect Paint (standard R36) $1,000
Electric Glass Sunroof $2,000
Satellite Navigation RNS510 (Sedan models) $2,500
So how I take that is that the sedan price is $65 990 includes $1000 for the metallic paint. So the base price without the metallic paint should be $64 990.
I have a base price $63990 so it seems to be cheaper than the official price list says.
Metalic paint on non-R36 models is $999.00 IIRC (I may be wrong) so your sunroof option should have that much knocked off the Sunroof price or $2,000. That's if the dealer is doing it right.
RRP is $64,990 though so you already have a discount.... It's actually a bit harder to bargain with dealers since the legislation changes I reckon.

Excellent.
It seems they got it right. I wasn't sure what the RRP was in May but I had the Feb price of $65 990.
So if the sedan was $64 990 it seems as though they subtracted the metallic paint price of $1000 leaving a base price of $63 990 and then adding the $2000 for the sunroof taking the price up to $65 990 with the sunroof which seems fair since the sunroof is $1000 more expensive than the metallic paint option.
Hmmm... I'm not 100% on the RRP though. Now that you mention it, it could be $65,990. Like I said, talking a few thousand dollars doesn't make much of a difference to me, hence I'm not 100% sure of how your dealer's done the figures.
Yes - dealers LOVE me! lol What's the best price? $72k drive away they say. Make it $70k and it's a deal. But it has SatNav and sunroof they say. I don't care, I wouldn't order one with those options, so make it cheaper and I'll buy it. Done they say! lol Makes it easy for everyone and I picked it up 4 days later.

You definitely did well to get the instant hit... I think that I would easily have paid another thousand or so to get it straight away vs waiting 4 months.
The waiting is very very ordinary. As you can see so much time to twiddle one's thumbs about. My wife is surprised I'm still so interested after 2.5 months of waiting.
lol... I wouldn't have been able to wait. I'd have bought a different car. An extra couple of thousand with a 4 day turn around? *in my best Jeremy Clarkson impersination* THANK YOU!
A white R36 costs $2000 more than any other colour, because you cannot order a white R36 without the sunroof. Why? Nobody seems to know. This is not just particular to the aussie market either, it's the same deal in Germany.
Here in Australia VW wont offset the price of the sunroof with the optional cost of metallic/pearl paint. They say the paint is free on the R36. In Germany on the other hand a white one is about Euro850, or the cost of metallic/pearl paint, cheaper...
