Welcome to VWWC. Lots of useful info here (try a search if you can't see a relevant thread), and some friendly helpful people.
How quick you get your car depends on
1 How busy Patricks are (and therefore how long it takes them to get do the compliance processing and get it to your dealer.
2 How long it takes your dealer to do the PDI and rego.
Depending on the above, you might get a nice Christmas present, but don't be too surprised if you have to wait a bit longer.
In the meantime, do a search for threads on checking a new car when you collect it.

Hi First VW
Which dealer are you getting your car through ?
I'm expecting my R36 to come through any day now too... from Burwins VW.
I've heard that the Customs & Compliance staff will be shutting down from 22/12/08 to 08/01/09, so we have to hope the cars make it to the dealer before then.

My dealer (John Hughes VW - PERTH) tried to **** me around at every corner...couldn't give me a firm delivery date...
So i went to John himself and told him this was unacceptable - i had a call later that day with a firm delivery date
You gotta put the pressure on em i say!

Below is a quote from my dealer, can anyone let me know what it actually means and what kind of impact am I expecting between 2008 and 2009 compliance plates other than resale maybe?
"Your car is now off the boat and the receivership paperwork signed. VW Australia have taken it upon themselves to assist all of their customers in Australia by holding any cars that have just arrived in bond and releasing them in January so they can have 2009 compliance plates fiited. We can arrange to have your car released now and should be here soon thereafter but will be 2008 compliance plates"

Having 2009 compliance plates won't make that much difference to secondhand buyers - the car was still built in 2008 and is therefore a "2008" car to most people (and car valuers). But of course just to add to the confusion it is "MY2009"2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

So a 9/08 build car is a 09 car. Make's sense?

Just to add another clarification to Golfworx's clarification. There are 3 main "year" classifications:
Build date (incl year) - the date the car was assembled. This is the one used by most astute second hand car buyers and valuers.
Compliance month/year - can be a later year than build date, depending on how long it takes to get the car to Australia and have the compliance plate fitted.
Model Year - this is decided upon by the manufacturer, and includes any group of changes (or deletions) to the specifications. Most manufacturers change from one model year to another at a certain point part way through the year, usually well before december. Often written as "MY2009" to help people know what equipment or mechanical changes a particular car has.2017 MY18 Golf R 7.5 Wolfsburg wagon (boring white) delivered 21 Sep 2017, 2008 Octavia vRS wagon 2.0 TFSI 6M (bright yellow), 2006 T5 Transporter van 2.5 TDI 6M (gone but not forgotten).

I've got an R36 due to arrive at Port Melbourne tomorrow. The advice I received was that this would be an MY09 model, regardless of when it was built or when it received it's compliance plate... this is in line with the comments above.
I spoke to the Dealer yesterday and they were hoping to receive the car from Customs within a week from arrival and then hand it to me a couple of days after that (with tint, etc). No mention of holding onto it.
From a resale point of view ... it's easy enough to ensure a future buyer understands that the car arrived in Australia 2 weeks before January 09 - so I'm pretty confident resale values would not be impacted significantly. The number of KM's on the clock would have a bigger impact.
