Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2009 Passat CC Key FOB Options

Have been away for a while - back again to see if anyone can help me save some money!

Daughter borrowed the Passat CC and has somehow managed to lose the spare FOB and attached house key!!! She has lost two spare house keys before! She said sorry and said she would pay for a new spare house key and a new FOB!

I knew she would be floored when I gave her the price to replace the FOB!

House key - no issues there.

Called Melbourne VW dealership and here is the quote (FOB and programming):

    AUD 1039.50. She was flabbergasted!

This is the total price for the FOB (from o/seas somewhere? Germany?). Programming cost at VW dealership was $275 and the rest was for the new FOB and the little rectangular piece where you attach your keyring would you believe - total 1039.50.

I feel bad asking her to pay all this for a spare FOB!!!

Are there any decent, safe and reliable, cheaper options? I do have a Foxwell tool but I'm not sure if it can "program" FOBs? Wary of buying anything online without knowing the ins and outs (and pitfalls).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

For an older car you will definitely be able to find a mobile locksmith in Melbourne who can supply you with 1 or 2 new FOB's for much less than the VW dealership price. Like this place for example Volkswagen Passat key replacement & Spare >> Keys On Wheels

Newer cars are harder to get new keys outside of the VW dealership network, but on the older cars pretty much any place can do it for you providing you have the original key for them to copy.
