Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • RNS-510 GPS unit sus

    Hi
My GPS unit generally won't come on in the mornings. Completely blank, so reversing camera no go too. It is generally OK later in the day when the car is warmer. VW service guys reckon the head unit is cactus and tried to sell me a new one for $6,200. I said: "Ha, bloody, ha". I tend to think it might be a 'cold solder' on a power cable.
Has anyone had an issue like this with this particular head unit (RNS-510)?
Also, does anyone have a recommendation or a good third-party replacement unit?

You could probably buy a 2nd hand RNS510 (in good working order) for less than $500 these days. Much better option than buying any 3rd party. Alternatively, an Apply CarPlay/Android Auto enabled RCD330+ might do the trick for you as well, also for less than $500.
