Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Sequential side indicators

I came across some options for plug'n'play side mirror indicators with the sequential/progressive feature (like the tail indicators).

Has anyone fitted these before? Are they any good?

If they end up being crappy, then I guess I can always just refit the OEM ones.. just want to check if worthwhile or not.

Anyhow here's a photo to show what I'm talking about: Click image for larger version

Let my impatience (err... adhd) get the better of me and decided to just go ahead and order some =D

Found some quality OSRAM units selling in Europe at around 2-3x the price of cheaper ebay options.

Looks like they should be durable: OSRAM Quality Testing LEDriving dynamic Mirror Indicator (EN) - YouTube

Now, I just have hurry up and wait 2-3 weeks for them to arrive from the UK - will post results once they're installed.

Being Osram, I suspect those will be a pretty good quality part. Nice find!

OSRAM indicators have finally shipped - arriving in a couple of weeks. I thought 4-6 week dispatch from the UK was just an amazon glitch...

Ordered a second set while I was waiting, so will probably end up with a spare set.

I suspect the delays are down to the global silicon chip shortage - pretty much anything with modern electronic components in it is on production delays at present, and that then impacts on availability...

These bad boys arrived today. I'm planning to install them over the weekend, though the instruction say to remove the mirrors (glass), which is a little scary =S

Very nice indeed and as mentioned earlier, being Osram they'll be v good. I put some on the R36 some years (not Osram though) back and I think I'd remember having to remove the glass on those , but maybe I've blocked it out...

You may have already done so, but have a look at some Euro forums and vids - I'd be sure it's been done there...

                Best of luck

Installed them this afternoon and really happy with the results.

It took around 45mins to do both - I was really careful with the glass mirrors, though they're relatively tough and have plastic backing that provides extra support.

I have taken video, but not sure how to post (please halp!). Have converted a 45Mb mp4 file to a ~4Mb gif in case that helps.. keep getting "invalid file" when trying the gif though

In the meantime, here's a grainy giphy link =P

Thanks for the heads-up Nemal. I’ve grabbed a set from Amazon for $120 with free expedited delivery which is a bargain. They are due to arrive mid- August.

Awesome =) Let me know how you go. The mirror cap clips can be a little tricky too, but there should be videos out there.

BTW - I recommend a set of plastic trim tools for the mirror removal. These can be found at supercheap/autobarn etc and are relatively cheap. They are really handy for any trim work - like removing inner door cards to fix your door handle that your wife accidentally popped out of the door =S

                          Thanks for the tips!

I bought a trim removal kit recently as I’ll be removing the door trims and applying some sound deadening soon as part of an audio upgrade, so I’m all set!

I’ve seen some people use large suction cups to help with the mirror removal - I might have some lying around.

Suction caps are an interesting idea.. the mirror is held in with 4x sets of clips on the ring. The trick it to get them to release while applying gentle outward pressure (ie. suction cap). You need to tilt the mirror all the way down to get in behind it.

There are two mirror cap clips. The inner one is relatively easy to unclip (while applying gentle pressure), where the outer one (road side) was more tricky - I found twisting a flat blade screwdriver to hold it open helped.

The indicators come with instructions that show which screws to loosen/remove. They didn't show the indicator clip though, which is at the inside bottom of the indicator light.

Anyhow, best of luck with it - it's relatively easy, hopefully my experience may just save you little time figuring it out for yourself.
