Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tow Bar an issue for Touareg?

Hi readers/members. I have just read a letter in Victoria's Royalauto magazine that suggests VW have a problem supplying a tow bar that adequately supports the tow capabilities of the vehicle. Can anyone shed more light on this issue for me?

On the new Touareg, there were supply issues regarding the wiring kits, as the orinal kit made for them didn't work with some functions on the cars. This has since been rectified. There was another concern, where people were fitting the previous model's towbar. While it does in fact bolt up, it is of the incoreect capacity.

If you want a towbar for Treg, check out Hayman Reese towbar which is rated at 3500kg/350kg and costs about half that of the VW Treg towbar ... and the hitch receiver faces horizontally unlike the current VW towbar which faces vertically (such that you cannot fit a hitch-mounted bike rack)

I think you will find a towbar with 350kg downball is incorrect as the vehicle is rated for max downball load of 280kg. Thats the reason the towbar of the old 7L6 model cannot be used on the new 7P Touareg.

          Correct.

Hayman Reese have a habit of doing their own thing with towbars, regardless of whether they're ADR-compliant or not.

I Do not suggest using after market. If you have most options like auto rear tailgate and adaptive cruise all these electrics are incorporated and coded specifically to the vehicle this can only be done 100% at Volkswagen during installation.
