Towing with 2.0 TSI 132kw & 280nm 4motion

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has experience with a towing weight of about 1200-1500kg with a 2.0 TSI Tiguan.

Looking at putting a tow bar on mine to tow a small Mazda race car on a tandem trailer. All up weight including the trailer would be maximum around 1500kg.

Thoughts and how would a TSI go? Anyone towing a similar weight with a TSI petrol?

I've done more with less (old FWD, less torque, same weight)
Main thing is where are you towing, if you are running up and down the majors it is pretty easy, city is just about keeping your wits about you as you can't rely on your breaking distances being there as someone thinks it is a good idea to jump your lane (but that is the same with any towing) If you are doing lots of hills where you don't get the run up then you may be frustrated, although the torque is very flat which is a huge help, but it will still do it
Someone else can comment on the gearbox, but you are comfortably below the manufacturers rating
Most cars it is just important to get your tow ball weight right, especially if you have hydraulic brakes, so you may find yourself doing experiments for position

I just recall towing an empty caged tandem box trailer with my 2013 Camry and it was crazy on fuel and hunted for gears like mad and really struggled. It was a 2.5 petrol.

4 cylinder Camry's have no torque - hence the gear hunting and struggling. Im sure it would have been a much more enjoyable experience if you had used a Aurion with the 3.5L V6.

The 2.0TSI will do a much better job of handling the weight of a trailer, but in general the DSG gearboxes aren't great for towing (on the open road they are fine, but low speed and maneuvering they aren't so great due to the twin clutch gearbox). A traditional automatic with torque converter is a safer option for towing.

The DSG I can handle as it will be 80% highway. Just didn't want to be going up hills being totally frustrated

That is manageable by how the car is loaded either frontwards or rearwards or less deep into the trailer. Just hoping the 2 litre petrol has enough guts to pull
it happily.

If not - get it tuned and you will release another 80nm or so from the engine.

Tiguan 132kw / 280Nm

4.2L V8 VB Commodore circa 1979 (great towcar providing you could keep the fuel up to it) 87kw / and around 240Nm torque
