Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Upgrading Tiguan Head Unit + Extras

    Afternoon all,

Recently picked up a 132tsi Tiguan with leather interior and bluetooth, but everything else is pretty well standard.

Looking to upgrade from the RCD310 to the latest version of the RCD510, as well as adding a genuine reverse camera and rear parking sensors. Not too concerned about the optical part of the parking sensors, but need the beeps so the Mrs doesn't accidentally touch park my new car!

I've found quite a few good deals on ebay - RCD510 with reverse camera capabilities for $310 and a genuine reverse camera for $220. Do these prices seem fair? I'm not mechanically talented at all, so will be looking to get someone to install everything. Does anyone have suggestions as to who I should get to install it, and also, how much should I be paying for installation?

I'm not 100% sure on what parking sensors to get. I want them to be as close to the real thing as possible, but don't really want to spend $800 at a dealer getting them put in. As mentioned above, I'm not too fussed about the optical park of the sensors - I just don't want someone to get into the car when I'm looking to sell in a few years and think straight away that they're aftermarket sensors. Any suggestions on where I should be looking to buy them, and also who I should be looking too to install?

    Thanks,

    Rhys

    Hey Rhys,

Question - Did you end up having any luck on this? I'm currently in the market for a Tiguan but most come with 80% of what I'm after but lack the RCD510. Curious if you've had any luck and if you did, what did it end up costing to get it installed?

Upgrading Tiguan Head Unit + Extras

Upgrading the head unit to a RCD510 is a relatively simple exercise. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

Adding a reverse camera is a different story.... Camera is cheap but install is ~3-4 hours.

As tigger said, the RCD/RNS upgrade is very straight forward, some trim, four screws and a couple of plugs and you're done. If you're not going to the RNS510 you don't even need any coding... and even if you are all it does it add in the MFD integration if your car supports it (not sure what's in the Tigs).

Reverse camera is more involved and time consuming but is a DIY job if you're keen. I've done installs in the Golf as well as a couple of Amaroks. This one does need some coding.

The reverse sensors... well that's not something I've done before and I'm told it can be a bit of a bitch (install wise). The coding is easy enough

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Best to buy a Bosch RCD510 as an A version has the factory rev camera connector Look for a big yellow socket on the back of the unit.

Only the 5K0 035 190A model has it I think the B model has an RCA socket
