Totally understand where you're coming from, mate...
One other factor to consider, though: when i ordered mine, i chose the ET45 offset, but it was unavailable at the time so opted for the 35 offset & am glad i did!! It's the one to go for with the Tiggy... Do GTC offer them in 35 offset?

Yes they do come in ET35's and thats what I'm hoping to get as I want to sit fully flushed and maybe just that tad fatter.

Good to hear that some guys have bought from Jason! He's saying the coming container load in March are selling quickly and may not have stock if we are not fast enough.

It won't be bad, its just that most people want the look to be as wide as legally acceptable... ie flush with the guards. ET35 will give you a 20mm wider 'stance' compared to ET45.

I'm thinking about this as well, i think its the ET45 for the Golf GTI - i had a look at thier site and yup they look the biz!!

Offset only applies in one direction, its how far off centre the mounting surface of the wheel is so it's only measured once. Have a look here it explains all:

So the diff between an ET35 & an ET45 from the centreline of the wheel to the mounting face is not 10, but 5mm? I was thinkin' 10 on the left side of the car & 10 on the right... Somethings just not adding up . . . . . Arggghhhhhhh..... !

By that definition in the link:
Offset (ET) = Wheel Centreline (WC) - Wheel Mounting Face (WMF)

Hence, if:
WC > WMF, then offset is +ve, ie WMF is inside of WC.
WMF > WC, then offset is -ve, ie WMF is outside of WC.

Meaning:
ET35 sits 35mm inside of WC.
ET45 sits 45mm inside of WC.

So since ET35 and ET45 are +ve, then ET +35mm - ET +45mm = 10mm difference. ie ET35 is 10mm closer to WC than the ET45, which in lament terms, means it sits 10mm further OUT on each side.

Kind of lol. It can be confusing don't worry. You're right MGV, each wheel is 10mm further out with an ET35 vs ET45 but you wouldn't say that gives you 20mm more offset, talk in terms of each wheel rather than pairs or you could just as well say ET35 gives you 40mm more poke if you added all 4 together.

An easy rule of thumb in working out how much more poke you're going to get is add the ET difference (in this case 10mm) to half of the extra wheel width, e.g. let's say you went from a 20x8 ET45 to a 20x9 ET35, the ET gives you 10mm extra poke, the extra width you would halve because it goes both inside and outside so 9"-8" = 25mm (close enough) so that gives you 12.5mm extra width plus 10mm extra offset which results in an OUTWARD increase of 22.5mm overall over your old wheel. The inside of the rim would be half of the extra width, in this case 12.5mm MINUS the offset increase of 10mm, so the inside of the rim will sit 2.5mm further in that your old wheel. ERGO, stay with me where hehe, you will be 22.5mm further out and 2.5mm further in which is an overall width increase of 25mm YAY!!. PHEW lol.
