  • Tiguan vs BM X1 - help me

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and have many questions that may have already been answered in the past. I do apologize to start a new thread but need your assistance in convincing my wife to settle for a Tig and not the X1.
We have been looking for a SUV for a while.. And since the time I have seen the new tiguan 2012 facelift on Internet, I just cannot think of any other car. My wife is inclined towards X1.. personally I didn't like the looks and the engine cannot compete with tiguan. X3 and X5 are out of budget.
What are the best selling points of Tiguan..
Also, is it true that the new facelift model now comes with much more value for money! Does it include options like mdi, blutooth, side heated mirrors, leatherette, keyless start and front led lights as standard?
I need your help and advice to become a proud owner of tig!! Help me...

BMW X1 is a solid car, but does the price premium justify the very little extras or quality you get over the Tiguan? In the end, the X1 comes down to budget and if you or your wife want that BMW mark. Value for money, Tiguan wins hands down.

hifi, interesting basis to shop for a car

I hope its just not the facelift in play.. anyway, you are on Tig forum so expect bias opinions to energize your desire. +1 vote to Tig.

When calculating your figures, include BMW cost of servicing. And if that doesnt convince your partner, get a Tig demo over the w.end from dealer to take home.
      It sells itself.

I'd be careful in going down that path, especially when BMW's corporate program includes free servicing for 4 years.

But I agree on doing the test drives. My wife preferred the Tig over the X1 due to the former's higher ride height and more spacious cabin.

you've only got to stand back and look at the them - the X1 is very average, base model (I believe) has less options than Tig etc etc. Take the badge off and replace it with toyhyunkia etc. and I bet she wouldn't be considering it at all.

My old lady went through this exact decision a couple of months ago. Test drove both. The BMW diesel is a much stronger and more refined engine than the VW one and the build quality is slighty better also. What made her get the Tig? She loved the petrol TSI/DSG combo more than the weak petrol 4cyl/torque converter in the X1. But, most importantly, she could get a fully loaded (her options list was 20 items long!) 147TSI for the same price as a base 20d (with no options). That was the deal maker

Test drove the X1 prior to buying the Tig. The 3 things that swayed us away from the X1 was price, the basic car comes with very little and options are very expensive, the 2nd one was power, we drove the SDdrive 18i and it felt very sluggish, especially compared to the Tiguan and finally interior size, the Tiguan doesn't have the biggest of interiors but the BMW felt a lot smaller.

Thanks guys! I feel the same in many ways.. We are going for a test drive tomorrow for the 125tsi DSG!! Super excited! Convincing process is on.. Showed my wife the auto hold function and park asist on YouTube. Trying to get her interested, by the way she does like the new led front lights.

Guys, tomorrow is a big day for us, especially me, it's our 1st tig drive.. I want to impress my wife with all the good feedback I have read on this blog so far.
If i see that sparkle in her eyes, I will place my order without any delay.
Any suggestions/tips on what to expect from dealers. Is it a good idea to place an order immediately after the test drive or wait and have another dealer compare/ break the price? We have never bought a new car before and intend to purchase a new one this time. (have had all second hand or used cars before - no experience buying a new one)
Your suggestions and help will be highly appreciated!

                Cheers

Just be aware that many of the items you mentioned will not be standard. I would think the facelifted model should have similar specs to the current ones. Front LED DRLs would probably come with the optional Xenons. Park Assist is also an optional extra. All that I am saying is that if you're not careful, the options will quickly add up. Mind you, will be cheaper than a comparably specc'ed X1.

As for convincing the missus, point out that the Tig is made in Germany. The rear seats can slide forward if you need a little more room. Have a look at what others have been paying (there's a thread somewhere), and if the price is good, go for it. Otherwise, take some time to compare what you can get from other dealers. And be calm. The salesperson can smell it when a customer gets too excited and they know once they get their hook into you, there's no letting go. Have fun with the experience!

No offence to the Tig owners but they're not my favourite car and if money wasn't an object, I'd easily take the X1! It actually looks interesting for a start, the interior is very nice with a nicer finish and a less boring design that isn't shared with the Golf Plus, more interior and exterior colours available and it drives better too.

Someone above mentioned a lack of interior room but I found it to similar to the Tig, and I can excuse the small X1 boot because it is small, unlike the Tig and it's woeful boot. As for engines, I'd go for an xDrive23d manual but of course not everyone wants to spend that much on a car, so the 20d in sDrive or xDrive forms would be excellent with enough power and torque for even 'soccer mums' .

In my humble opinion, unless it's $100k+, no car is worth waiting six-twelve months for and the Tiguan waiting list is absolutely stupid and I know the X1 would be similar. The other thing with the BMW is because of their greater/longer options list, the X1s that arrive here are of greater variety which would be an advantage to me, unlike the same-spec everywhere Tig (but of course, what if your ideal X1 isn't here?).

But I'm talking about two cars I wouldn't buy because I'd have the Skoda Yeti that arrives in July. It'll be cheaper than both, yet, have a bigger boot, a similar drive and more equipment too. But each to their own really .

Good luck with car searching, it really is a fun time!

The yeti is going to be a good deal if you can get over the hideous looking front end and the lack of front clearance.

The tiguan has plenty of boot space if you know how to manage it.
The rear seats slide forward and they also fold down in a 60/40 split which has allowed me to carry a lawnmower, a 42" tv and 2 other passengers in the car with no worries.

Having said that i wouldn't wait any more than 4 months for a car.
And if the Tiguan wasn't an option i would have gone a Octavia RS

Like I have mentioned before, I fitted a pram, a dishwasher, two toddlers, my wife and I into the Tig. It was tight but much better than expected.

no offence to skoda owners, but VW v. scoda - most people have never heard of them (until NRMA gave the octavia a deserved award last year), so resale alone is going to be a big factor that will make some people think twice. We know the Tig is holding value, and the X1 will probably hold value OK too (at least better than the bigger / dearer beemers anyway).

                            Thanks,

I didnt realize that the dealership was closed due to Easter. Checked my email and it was today!
Infact I just got back and guess what.. wife's happy!! We test drove 125tsi DSG, metallic black with leather and whoaa a big sun roof! It had some interesting functions and addons.
We test-drove for good 30-40mins and came back to the dealership at around 9am. Spent 2 hrs discussing pricing with the dealer.. It's a hard process, but the dealer won't budge for a cent
He said since it's a new model that hasnt arrived they can't do any better. At the most he could do was throw in free mats if I placed the order today.
He wasn't able to tell us much about the new model whether blutooth and mdi is part of the new one and any other additions except the facelift.
He did advise that there is a 5 month wait.
We haven't placed our order yet..

I was just saying that's what I'd have, not for hifi-tig to do the same . And we do pay less in the first place for what are essentially the same cars (especially when you compare spec to spec) so oh well.
