  • Park Assist - How good is it?

    Guy's

I just wanted a little bit of feedback on how good the park assist is on the Tig.

Also can a dealer install the park assist aftermarket without voiding warrantly?

It would be of great insight if the Tig enthusiasts could compile a list of the options that can't be fitted after market.

    Thanks in advance

System is good and parks the beast better than me (who has driven hatchbacks all my life up until now).
The actual front end/nose of the Tig is very deceptive when parking.

But only thing is you can't really rush the system. It will fail and refuse to engage, if you try and step on the gas straightaway after selecting reverse.

AFAIK pretty much most of the major options can't be fitted after market:
    1. Bi-Xenon
    2. Sunroof
    3. Leather
    4. Park Assist
    5. Adaptive Chassis Control
    6. Alarm
    7. Off Road Technology
    8. Sat Nav with integrated RVC to some extent, as is a PITA and therefore expensive to do after market.

Chime in anyone, if incomplete or incorrect?

I use mine when ever I have to reverse park, it works really well. Have only had one problem occasion which was reversing between a car and a flatbed truck - which was in front of me. Although it picked up the cab and it told me it was ok to reverse, it must have lost site of the tray because it was going to spear me stright into the back of it! Only other issue I had once was when it parked me too far out from the kerb - but there was no car behind me and I was just showing off (teach me!!!).

Would I get it again? no, but only because I don't often have to reverse park and I can do it myself fine, but if I lived in the city or had to do a lot of reverse parking, it would be top of the list.

Park Assist can't be added as an accessory. You have to order it with the vehicle.

How good is it? Honestly, it's only as good as the user. You will need to find somewhere quiet once you pick up the car, and learn how to use it correctly. No salesman out there seems to know how it works.

Tip: the closer you are to the car you're setting up to (the one you'll end up behind in a reverse park), the closer you'll be to the gutter when you finish.

I was under the impression it only parallel parked for you, does it reverse park as well?

I've also observed that it struggles a bit with parking with small vehicles (like motor bikes and scooters) either in front or behind.

We had a demo and it worked really well - the salesman knew what he was doing!

I don't do much city driving, so didn't feel the need for it. And I can reverse-parallel park a Nissan Patrol, so when I get my Tig I figured I'll be fine

I could totally appreciate how it would be useful though, for people who aren't confident parkers or need to parallel park a lot.

The clever bit is, if you're in a oneway street and want to park on the opposite side of the road, flicking on the right hand indicator tells the car to look on the right for a suitable park, rather than the left, then does it all for you.

Thanks for all of the feedback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
                  It's been really helpful.

It seems like a great feature to have and probably something you need if the wife is not a great reverse parker.

I do have patience but if the car is going to take more than 20 secs to reverse park itself then, I'd be very frustrated.

How much of a tight space will it park itself into?
The reason for the park assist is to fit into tight spaces, on a slope (as the distance behind you is deceptive) and for the missus so doesn't have to drive around in circles to fit a big enough spot to fit a few cars.

Yep ... I reckon insurance company should give you a reduced premium, if you've taken out "park assist" against your wife.

So another question for that YOUI mob to include, if they're genuine about getting down to specifics.

Park assist can park the Tiguan into a space that's 2m longer than the car itself. So you need 1m infront, and 1m behind the car. Which is also the legal requirement for parking in Australia - or something like that.

Tighter than I would attempt. Problem is, once your in there, you've then got to get yourself out!

It works really well, and a great way to teach people how to actually reverse park properly.

                            I think it's 1.2m.
New park assist 2.0 is out though, 80cm!!
And it has "escape" function (50cm...) and T parking as well.

Overall I think that the feedback on the park assist is very positive.

Definitely one problem would be getting yourself out of a tight spot.

Also as the missus is only a beginner driver, if she relies on the park assist now, she will never learn how to reverse park and every car we purchase from here on end will need the park assit option.

So the the Park Assist option is a no go for me.
