Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tilly Tig

    Hi everyone,

The wait for our new Tig is almost over... almost

Tilly Tig (don't blame me for the name! The kids had a role in naming her AND its ganna be the Mrs' car) has finally reached port and is currently sitting on the dock waiting on Customs to give it the once over.

Pending Customs release time frames and however many extra days my dealer needs to get it ready, we'll be able to receive delivery of the new 125 TSI baby (Yes, I'm a very proud father).

Looking forward to picking it up, to say the least.

Thanks to the great info found in this forum regarding pickup, detailing and car care, Tilly already has a check list to meet for the initial collection and a 'bath' planned for when she gets home. Again, thanks to posts & info by DMS & Team_V, I've hit up Car Care Products and gotten everything I need to give the Tigs paint job that first layer of protection.

Procedure will involve an initial spray down with a high pressure hose, two bucket cleaning method using Dodo Juice pH Neutral Maintenance Shampoo with a Microfibre Multi Purpose Mitt, followed by a clay using the Mint Grey Clay Bar Kit, dry down with a Waffle Weave Microfibre Drying Towel and then to finish off with the Nanolex Premium Spray Sealant. That should only take me about two days...

Following that, I've got a couple of little custom cosmetic mods to attach. Remember spokey dokeys!? Well I couldn't find any to fit the rims, so I had to go with something else instead

Lots of other plans in motion and I haven't even picked it up yet, though the idea is to spread them out a bit (have to at least wait for the engine to be run in for stage 1)

So far on the to do list (probably in this order):
    • Window Tint
    • RNS510
    • APR ECU Upgrade
    • Cold Air intake
    • Rear Sway Bar

And then after that, the wish list; which includes:
    • H&R Springs
    • Downpipe
    • Haldex Performance Controller (still um'ing and ah'ing about this one)

Also recently found on the APR site that they are doing a K04 Conversion System for the Tig...

    The list keeps on growing

Once we pick it up I'll post some photo's (as soon as i work out how)

      Good thread!

I'm tracking my new Black 147 as we speak.. Lands in Brisbane on the 22nd.

I want to make sure I give it the right care from the get go so I'm interested in your selection.

Where did you purchase your goodies from?

Wife opted for beige leather (I know, I know) so I will need to add in some leather care to your kit. Any suggestions?

Thanks Superviza, nice choice on the 147. If my kids were a few years older we would have done the same.

I am of the same opinion mate, give it the right care from the start.

          I sourced all these from
Car Care Products / Car Care, Car Wax, Car Polish, Car Covers, Detailing products & more ... based on information and feedback I read in the forum.

They have some great leather care products as well. Try the Duragloss 221 Leather Conditioner and just follow it up every 3/4 months to keep it in good nick.

There is also the Nanolex Leather Sealant which sounds good but I havent seen any feedback on it yet - care to be the test dummy?

Thanks again for a great reply, very useful information for me (and I'm sure a lot of others)

Looks like it's time to go shopping (again; ordered a VCDS today)

I'll look into the leather products and give them ago

Thanks for the info Prodigy, sounds like we’ve got two guinea pigs for the Duragloss – looks like a good kit

Haven’t bought any wax yet as wanna see how the sealant goes first.

Do you use them after each other – i.e. sealant first, wait a few hours, then wax; or are you doing them separately?

                  vince,
its a lot of work but worth it, just done similar work to my 147, if you are going to all that trouble well worth taking the wheels off and treating them to the Nanolex sealant as well also consider buying the Nanolex car shampoo as it 'tops up' the sealant when you wash- apparently... heres the link to my work !

Yes, I applied the Nanolex and left it for a few hours then applied the wax.

One thing with the Nanolex was i found it quite difficult to buff off, i think the one i bought Car Care Products / Nanolex / Exterior / Paint Sealant / Premium Paint Sealant Kit is slightly different to yours as as the sealant itself isn't a spray. All i know is it took me a fair while to do the whole car.

As for the Dodo Juice wax i highly recommend it if you go down that path, very easy to apply and remove.

                      Hi Tilly's Tig,

I wish mine was sitting at the port! I have my cleaning schedule ready to action as well! I'll be using Zaino products though, as I've had lots of experience with them.

If I could recommend one product it would be PoorBoys Spray and Rinse Wheel Cleaner it is quite possibly the best wheel cleaner I have ever used! Even with the soft Euro brake pads the wheels come up sparkling after a spray and then rinse with the high pressure cleaner.

Good luck with the car, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

                      Cheers,
                      MCL

Very nice work epilot. Car looks great. Actually, how would you feel about doing mine? I see you have nitrogen fills as well. Have you noticed the difference over standard air fills? Is it a hassle to get them re-filled / checked?

Thanks for the advice, will definitely be sealing the wheels as well! Did you get the Alloy Rim Sealant or just stuck with the standard Paint Sealant?

Right, so seal & wax - there goes my weekend I guess, but I know the results and long term benefits will be worth it

The Nanolex kit does look different but it could be just re-packaged (I mean, how I we really to know...) but I'll let you know how it goes Prod

Dodo Juice Purple Haze Wax it is! I think I need the same one as you as the car is black - i.e. "dark in colour".

Not sure I need the pro version though, as I am already using a sealant

                        Thanks for the recommendation.

Lol mcl - I know the wait can be excruciating, but at least we can track the ships

Have heard good wraps about Zaino as well, but as it was further along in the alphabet, "D"odo got in first

Thanks for the tip mate. Have taken note of the cleaner for follow up. Depending on how well the sealant protects the rim, I may need to order it in sooner than expected. Plus that's what I like to hear:

Hopefully not too long a wait now

So, another order to place on Car Care - Dodo Juice Purple Haze Wax and possibly Nanolex Shampoo & Rim Sealant

They must love this site with all the plugs they get... discount should be higher imho

                          vince,
$6/ wheel at your local Jax Quickfit or the like checked every 6 months, no hassle and cheap insurance to avoid excessive wear.
used Nanolex paint sealant on the rims, use very sparingly on the body/ wheels as its very difficult to buff off if you apply too much...
i would avoid any acid or lye based wheel cleaner it will stuff your wheels eventually- Pboys IS acid based, there are many good options.
                          regards

That may have been my problem when i used the Nanolex, although i tried to use it as sparingly as possible it may have still been too much. Did you also find it quite difficult to buff off?

I purchased the Micro CAN model from Dubadiction (Ran by a forum member I believe).

$299 with free shipping... I Figure that if I'm uber careful and research each change I should be ok

I'm doing the RNS upgrade as one of my first projects so figure the VCDS will be handy to code up the nav stuff and clear errors... No doubt it will get it's fair share of use...

Thanks for the links about the products etc.. Very helpful!
