Tyres - New tyres for Tiguan

I'm still puzzled why VW don't offer full size spares as a factory option in Australia. I have foregone the boot space for the added benefit of a full size spare and there's quite a few others that have done the same.

Maybe the answer lies in the statistics and you would be surprised if it turns out that you are the minority. I did exactly the opposite, I got rid off the space saver wheel completely and bought an official VW tyre repair kit (with compressor and can of product). The whole kit fits in the right compartment area in the boot, behind the lights. That's because I NEED space for the pram and my golf clubs. And the bags when my family is travelling. And for many other things.

Or another answer is that local authorities are not regulating the spare wheel size for SUVs and let manufacturers use space savers while in Europe they say for SUVs you can only have full spare wheel. I am just guessing.

Or another answer is that VW is saving money, because Australia is far away from their factories plus the high labour cost here and if they would do the same they do in Europe, it would make their cars more expensive here and less people would buy them.

Or another... no, I stop now. Go and ask VW.

Generally agree that this is a solution but my flat last week was a rock through the sidewall.
I believe no amount of product would have fixed that, also I believe that sidewalls aren't allowed to be repaired.

...or you could take the opportunity to upgrade your spare to full-size wheel, rotate one of your 50% used tyres onto your spare and fit 2 new tyres on the front

Just a suggestion... and realise that it's the expensive time of year around Christmas.

What I have done is put the new Pirelli P1 at the back and will use it as a spare when it comes to replacing the other tyres. I have already enquired about getting a full sized steel wheel.
It will be good insurance when the need comes to taking the Tig off road.

Tyres Again - pros & cons of these options please

back to this thread again .Yes its tyre time again. Got the standard 16 " wheels with 215/65/16 tyres . We have 2 tiguans my wifes & my sons & have had 3 sets of tyres between them , all original equip . Yes we bought a full set of wheels & tyres off gumtree so we could have full size spare wheels . So far we have had the Hankook Dynapro HP which got about 40000km , then the Pirelli P6 which have done about 40000 (they are the ones needing replacing on my Sons car ) , & my wife has the Bridgestone dueller HP sports on hers & has done 30000 so far but by the looks she will be due for tyres again at about the 40000km as well.
Have heard of lots of people getting higher kms from the Hankooks ?
Both my Wife & Son do drive some long distances & would say they are conservative driver types when around town. So good wear would be an advantage as long as it doesn't sacrifice handling on wet roads too much.
Any thoughts on the following quotes I have been able to get around town - Pros & Cons of any .

Roger, we also have 2 Tiguans, one with Hankooks and the second one with Pirelli P6. Wife's Tig with hankooks won't see 40,000km out of the tyres, just shy of 30,000km she is on last 1mm from the TWI. But, I see on some other Tiguans Hankook tyres lasting well beyond 40,000 km. How long your tyres last also depends from the quality of the road surface you drive on and in my area are a lot of roadworks and the surface is very rough. Also the roundabouts will shorten the tyre's life.

I've decided to go with the Coopers CS4 Touring in about 3 months time or even sooner.

Roger, we are on our second set of Hankooks the first lasted just on 45000 (could have gotten more but changed due to all the wet weather we were having at the time) the second set has done 50000 and has about 2mm to the TWI. So I think in 5 to 10K they will need replacing them with another set of Hankooks.

Spoke with the Hankook rep yesterday and there is some doubt if he will be able to get the tyres as there has been some change in the distribution company , so I think they are scratched off at the moment.
Leaning towards either the Coopers or the Kuhmo KL 51 both advertise longevity , just hope they handle OK still in the wet . Are these long wear tyres noiser due to the harder compound ?

As mentioned in another thread, mine can be had for $350... (or $100 ea) Haven't got around to listing them anywhere yet, but they are the original Pirelli P6's with ~80% tread.

Already done that once to get the second set of wheels so can have the full size spare . Not so easy finding anything close in Albany WA.

Well I have replaced the tyres with nothing that was on my original list . Gone for the Bridgestone Ecopia EP850 , they are supposed to be a fuel saving tyre but with good wear & handling . As they are reasonably new tyres there is not much in the way of reviews out there . first impressions when driving it back yesterday was how Smooth it felt . Obviously smoother (previous were Pirrelli P6) . Also quieter (though old tyres were well down on tread ) .
will be waiting to hear reports back from my son how they are travelling in a few months as my wifes Tig is due for new rubber in another 10,000km .

My original Bridgestone Duelers lasted about 60,000Km and still had over a millimetre of legal tread. I had a look at the options out there and ended up going with Continental Cross Contact LX2. They cost me about $170-odd each and I'm very happy with the traction and low noise.

How is your son going with Ecopia EP850? There is no review on these tyres.
I'm thinking to replace my 40000klm tyres with Ecopia EP850 or Toyo Open Country H/T.
