Tyres - New tyres for Tiguan

From what little driving I've done on new tyres (been in workshop almost the whole time since getting DP and tune sorted) I'm pretty happy with the KL51 Kumho's. Very quiet (compared to Bridgestones anyway) and still seem plenty grippy even though they have 600 treadwear rating. Got slightly higher aspect sidewall, so was expecting them to be a bit more squishy on corners, but not noticeably different. If anything it grips better and turns in quicker now Only downside is that the rattle/knock from RH rear wasn't trailing arm bush after all, so looks like I'll have to delve in to the innards of the door to see if I can find what's loose

I am finding my 18" dueler hp sport to be noisy.. in fact the advan neova ad08s were quiter! will look at replacing it with either goodyear f1 assy 2 or michelin pss as they both come in 235 50 18n when the duelers die... but i feel it will be a while like 30-40,000km to go!

I thought the Bridgestone's weren't bad, until I did 3000km on them. You're right, they're noisy, not that good in the wet either. I can't really afford to go and drop money on new tyres (given I just bout this car) but I can assure you, once they're worn out 30k-40k kms then I'm switching for sure.

I've never been a fan of Bridgestone, generally always had Continental or Pirelli tyres on my cars, just before I bought the Tig I put Khumos on my old car and I was quite suprised, they are a pretty good value tyre.

Yeah, thinking back they were probably noisy from almost the get go - but once they get to about 15000km, OMG, you may want to start saving now Having just done about 1000km in 2 days on the Kumho KL51's, I've got to say I'm very happy - nice and quiet on all road surfaces (just a faint hum at worst), and very grippy even in the wet at high speed (as I discovered overtaking 2 or 3 cars in one go) My only complaint was that the steering seemed a bit light and floaty at high speed, but when I had the chance I checked the tyre pressures and the tyre shop had pumped them all up to about 40psi! Let them down to 34 on the front and 36 on the rears, and the old stability and nice steering resistance is back again With ample grip,as well as good comfort and queitness and excellent treadware rating combined with good price and 80000km (pro-rata) warranty I reckon you can't go wrong. Added bonus was that by going from 235/50R18 to 235/55R18 the slightly bigger rolling diameter has the speedo now reading about 1kph over actual speed, rather than the standard 4-5kph.

I have just found that I have a nail embedded in my tyre while washing my Tig yesterday. The worst part is that its near the sidewall and the tyre needs to be replaced . The problem is my local tyre dealer says that the stock Pirelli P6 are no longer available and that he can replace it with a P1.
My question is, is this acceptable? Apart from different tread pattern, would it make a difference in ride and noise quality.
Should I actively try and find the same tyre. All the other tyres are still at about 50%, so not ready to replace the whole set.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes - the regulations only state that the carcass construction of all tyres fitted on the vehicle must be of the same type (e.g. cross-ply or radial).

Everything else is fair game - including make, model, tread pattern, tread depth, and so on. Even the load index need not be identical (but must not be below the manufacturer's requirements), and likewise the speed symbol (but must be at least rated S, i.e. 180 km/h).

Having said that, it is best practice for all tyres to be of the same make and model. The next best thing is to have the same tyres per axle.

So rather than replacing all four tyres, you can replace two tyres in order to keep them identical per axle, if you feel so inclined - but even this is not strictly necessary, nor required.

Apart from different tread pattern, would it make a difference in ride and noise quality.

A set of brand new tyres (of a comparable size and type) will ride more quietly compared to any set of half worn tyres, but all things being equal, it would appear that the Pirelli Cinturato P1 is more likely to ride a little quieter than the Pirelli P6.

However, you may not notice a significant difference if you are only replacing one tyre.

Should I actively try and find the same tyre.

I wouldn't bother. The Pirelli P6 is a pretty old design now, and it will only get harder to find in the future.

I got Achilles Sport 2's put on my Tiggy and Golf GTI - Tiggy has 11k on them, wearing well, not noisy, more than enough grip for daily driving. $175 a corner at Jax. Been really happy with them.

Just a suggestion... and realise that it's the expensive time of year around Christmas.

Certainly, if one intends to go off-roading, or visit remote areas (off-road or otherwise) in any vehicle, carrying a full-sized spare would be considered essential, amongst other vital items.

Though personally, I wouldn't go as far as carrying a full-sized spare if the vehicle is driven in metropolitan areas (as opposed to rural or regional areas, where you'd be more inclined to do so, depending on driving distances and/or availability of services).

If low noise is a priority, I would be inclined to try a set Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV.

Mine are due soon as well and I will go with Coopers. They're reasonably priced and have guaranteed mileage. The noise level is also the most important for me as well as a durability.

I for one will would second this,
I got a flat on Sunday at Forster 3hrs north of Sydney. Not a single tyre place open on the weekend.
So had to travel back to Sydney on the space saver spare
Lets just say it was a long and embarrassing trip from Forster to Sydney sitting on the freeway doing a maximum of 80kph being overtaken by everything else on the road.
Maybe I should have put a "L" plate on the car and it would have at least given me a better excuse for only going 80kph.

I'm still puzzled why VW don't offer full size spares as a factory option in Australia. I have foregone the boot space for the added benefit of a full size spare and there's quite a few others that have done the same.

I could swap the space saver back in when I'm around the city but can fit everything I need in the boot so haven't bothered. Space saver sits in the shed for when I sell the car.

Why would you be puzzled? We have smooth as silk bitumen roads all over the Australia and almost no gravel roads. It's all city driving and the tyre shops are almost every 10km.

But, seriously I think that the VW Au is responsible for that. If they would request the full size spare the VAG would have to include it with the new vehicles.
