Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It is definitely NOT pinging, this has been disproved many times over on Vortex.

In the old days prior to electronic control of the engines systems you could adjust the timing, fuel mixture etc...this noise sounds like old fashioned pre-ignition(pinking),which is not supposed to happen on todays engines as a Knock sensor is fitted to detect it...
I would suggest getting an old time MECHANIC to have a listen to determine whether this is pre-ignition and if so then approach your VW agents with the info....Its maybe that the MAP is set to lean to keep the emmissions down !!!!!!

Anyone having the issue after an APR remapp or new wastegate?

Before and after APR remap, made no difference.

It's a bit strange/concerning that not everyone has it. That could indicate a possible manufacturing issue around tolerance variations of some componentry. Bit like some of the holden 186 red motors coming out with one oversize piston - from new!

I beleive that the sound is coming from the cat. Will get the guys at the service to take a look at the first 1000km checkup.

Could the noise be related to piston slap, I heard that the engines run a larger than normal piston to bore clearance and that's also the reason why they use a bit of oil between services. Cheers.

The general consensus seems to be a noisy/fluttery wastegate.
