  • Tiguan 147TSI rattle concern

    Hi All,
First timer here. I bought a new Tiguan 147TSI (auto) - great looking car, gutsy, roomy with all the bells and whistles BUT I've got that annoying rattle also when I accellerate and rpms are between 2000-2500/2700. Have taken the car for a test driv with a technician who was somewhat perplexed when he heard it but when I picke it up I was advised by the 'customer sevice manager' that it was normal. But given that some other Tiguan owners don't have the same noise, I am thinking that I have been given the brush off. So I think that the only solution now is to have a vehicle comparison done i.e drive another model and see if it has the same noise.
This isn't my first turbo so I know what to expect with turbo charged engines but it is very annoying.
If anyone has any suggestion, please let me know.
Also, there is anothe VW website vwvortex.com that you may wish to look at too.
    Talk soon. Cheers.

I have the same noise too, there is basically no fix for this as VW have said its "normal". Not really a satisfactory answer but it seems there isn't a lot that can be done. Mine never did it when new but it came along about the 2000km mark. Some do it from new, other it develops, some don't do it all but it seems to be a very common problem. Would be nice if VW got off their ass and admitted its an annoying noise that SHOULD be fixed.

My 147 has the same noise too, the noise also developed after a few thousands kms, it wasn't there from new, I've done about 13000km now.

I haven't taken the noise up with VW as so many people have reported it (here and vortex) and everyone was told by VW it was "normal"...

Yes, I have the same problem. Developed after about 200km. I now have 400km so will wait till the first 1000km check up and see what they say. This should not happend to a $65000 car.......

what is this rattle? Why don't I have it? I've done 30000k's. Is it just a 147 thing? (hmm, no can't be - Pullstarter's has it too). I'll swap you a rattle for a never ending brake booster hiss.

only engine noise is a bit rattly (diesel like) idle, which I understand is the direct injection and all petrol tigs have

sorry to hear others are having trouble

Thats right they do at idle, with regards to the other ones, might be worth asking the dealer to go for a run with a chassis ear on, if the noise is presented that is. Hard when it doesnt do it, but if it is then the chassis ear can be hooked up to 5 locations on the vehicle and you can go for a drive with headphones on for a listen. Not an exhaust flex joint rattle, cat rattle?? Worse hot/cold??? Under accel might indicate a flexjoint issue as it will be getting loaded when you accel

This has been looked at in length on Vortex Jmac, initially it was thought to be an exhaust issue as you say but the general consensus seems to be a fluttery wastegate as stated by VW USA. Every dealer this problem has been taken to has said its "normal" and "nothing to worry about" which is also backed up by VAG head office. Not good enough in my opinion, especially if not every car does it, its noisy so fix it VW!!

Just because it's noisey, doesn't mean it's faulty.

You can't make a car completely silent. Besides, it's a machine, it's meant to make noise.

Faulty wasnt the issue, noise is the issue. Ok you fit a timing belt and over tension the belt, the water pump is then noisy, its not faulty but noisy it still not right. Really showing age and experience there my friend.

What conditions do you notice this guys? Hot or cold engine? Is it more obvious with windows up or down? Pulling, deaccelerating or coasting? Any particualr gear, speed?

Here's how mine sounds (from my thread: Help with 147TSI Engine)

If I accelerate gently the engine is fairly quiet in 1st gear, in second it starts quiet but then there is the annoying rattling kind of sound, 3rd gear the noise continues (at about 35km/hr by now), forth gear and about 50km/hr or just above the rattle noise stops and the engine sounds smooth again, cruising at 60km/hr in 5th it sounds good.

If I accelerate hard through the gears it sounds pretty smooth, although the rattly sound still comes and goes at the various times listed above, cruising on the highway it sounds smooth and quiet.

I've listened as my partner has driven off after dropping me off for example and you can hear a metallic sound as they accelerate away. The noise doesn't seem any louder or quieter if the windows are up or down.

Doesn't make any difference if the car is hot or cold the noise always happens on every acceleration, the engine sound absolutely normal on deceleration or coasting.

Been reading this thread from the beginning and the noise only seems to make itself heard under acceleration...am I correct?
In the old days prior to electronic control of the engines systems you could adjust the timing, fuel mixture etc...this noise sounds like old fashioned pre-ignition(pinking),which is not supposed to happen on todays engines as a Knock sensor is fitted to detect it...
I would suggest getting an old time MECHANIC to have a listen to determine whether this is pre-ignition and if so then approach your VW agents with the info....Its maybe that the MAP is set to lean to keep the emmissions down !!!!!!
