Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2014 Tiguan 2.0 132 TSI Oil Issues

Hi I bought my Tiguan brand new in Feb 2015 it had some issues with self acceleration at low speeds which of course disappeared when I contacted the Dealers Service Dept. Within 12 months I noticed that the car was heavy on Oil, auxiliary fan issues and in my opinion petrol but my big issue was the use of engine oil. Apologise ahead of time but this is a long story

After having its first service within 7 months the engine warning light came on checked and yes the oil was level was extremely low, phoned and was told that yes they had changed the oil, but bring it back we give free oil top ups, cars can use oil. I didn't think it safe to drive car that far with the about of oil in it so put in the recommended oil myself.

It bugged me, that they had a policy of bring it back get free oil top ups, considering how much they charge you to replace oil.

Called another Service Dept was told that yes issues had been found where oil was leaking into the engine, bring it them next service and they would look into it, so next service I did.

low and behold all of a sudden it went to VW Cars are know to use more oil than other cars, serviced it and told everything was good no problems found and your fan is doing what it should be doing, even though Im being told off at petrol stations for filling the car up with the engine going, of course its the fan going not the engine, its loud enough to be heard across the service station

5,000km later the fan is again going nuts so I check the oil, it is only half full and very dirty and gritty, I contact Service Dept don't worry its normal for VW cars to use more oil. After placing calls to try and find out more information about this, I contact VW Australia to ask why this was happening, out came the same response its a known issue that VW cars use more oil.

Im like can I drive to Sydney visit my family in numerous parts of Sydneys greater area and drive back to Brisbane without topping up my oil. Response Probably not

Told to organise an oil consumption test at my own expense (this car is still under warranty) before I can do this the car starts missing severely, coughing quite badly VW of course arrange for it to be towed to the closest VW Service Dept, not one around the corner from my house.

2 months it has taken them to try and fix my car, and surprise Im still having issues with the car.

Yes they did find that car was leaking into the engine, due a faulty Piston in number 1 cylinder that managed to find its way through quality control and into my car and others,
4 Pistons ordered, engine is completely stripped down and rebuilt,
Fuel injector dies, then they can't get the fuel to do what its meant to do.
Computer now won't talk to the engine so it won't start, it has a bug they said
VW specialist brought in to try and work out whats wrong with it
replace computer still can't work out why 1st cylinder isn't working
finally fix my car I bring it home, and over the weekend the engine drains itself of all its oil, lots more conversations with VW to be told that the work is not covered by VW even though its done by one of their service depts and they covered all the work under warranty but no if I take the car to my local VW service dept I have to pay

Car is towed back to Kedron where they say they fixed the leaks by replacing the gasket and another smaller gasket

One week I have had the car back, it is still leaking oil and now when driving at low speeds it accelerates on its own, not ideal when in bumper to bumper traffic

Anyway was wandering if anyone else was having the same issues as me and what they have done to get the issues fixed once and for all, I am in contact with the ACCC, Dept of Infrastructure and Dept of Fair Trading trying to get these issues resolved

If anyone else has trouble with there VW cars they should start call the ACCC Dept of Infrastructure and the
dept of Fair Trading in their state

Although it's a lot of work best to get it all sorted now under warranty than later.

If one workshop has done the job and there's an issue with the work carried out you have to take it back there as VW won't pay for the work to be done twice. If the dealer (independent business) has stuffed it up then they have to cop it and pay out of their own pocket to rectifiy the job.

Keep onto VW Aus if you're not happy with the level of service/response that you're getting from the dealer.

And yes these engines can consume oil. I keep a 1 litre bottle in the boot just in case I'm a distance from anywhere and the oil light comes on (I do try and check it more regularly though). That's partly the issue with 15,000km servicing. If you serviced more often then the consumption would be less of an issue.

Good luck with getting it sorted.
