    • Yeah it looks like either 255 or 265 with 40mm side walls is fine (0.52 or 0.6% difference). Thanks for that calc, pretty handy.

Yes that's my go-to for wheel/tyre fitment. Put in your stock size and then the new size you're considering and it does everything for you.

Generally you can change the width by 1 size up/down from stock and be OK.

        • Any issues needing 66.6 to 57.1mm hub rings? Like long term or sound issues?

Absolutely no issues. The hub ring does not take any load. They just allow you to centre the wheel on the hub when you bolt it up.

My HRE’s were supplied with hub rings and also my OZ Racing wheels previously. It’s quite a common practice with aftermarket wheels that they will manufacture to 66.6 for Audi and supply hub rings for VW (instead of manufacturing/stocking both specs).

Don’t get confused with spacers which aren’t legal in most states.

Question, how bad are these cheap Winrun tyres Tempe sell? I’ve always spent a stupid amount of money on Michelin Pilot Super sport etc over the years and I’m getting cynical in my old age. Are they that bad for $135 per 20inch tyre? Are the Michelin worth the $450

Hearsay is welcome. Experience would be preferable

              • Well it depends if you want to stop when you hit the brakes or turn around the corner when you turn your steering wheel really. These things are pretty over-rated.

Having said that there was a guy on here that did a long term review on some Chinese tyres: CHINESE TYRES vs BRAND NAME

This was a long-term review and although the KF550 tyres weren't quite as good as the top-tier tyres for the price they were certainly good bang for buck (according to amunra).

Not all the cheaper Chinese tyres perform as well so you'd have to be prepared to bin a set if they weren't up to it.

You can get the KF550's in that size for around $150 a tyre shipped. Or for $100 more Tempe has the Goodyear F1A3's which would be my choice if you were on a budget as the Goodyears are a decent tyre for pretty good price. I'd just be checking how old these are as Tempe is renowned for selling "old" stock and "grey"/parallel imports (i.e. not imported by the manufacturer).

I have heard that but I have bought two sets of Michelin’s pilot SSs from Tempe and because of that rumour checked both times, actually were good made same year as purchase so no issues there.

I’ve never bought a budget tyre, except maybe a Khumo, especially not a WINRUN!

But the tread pattern on the Winrun actually looks really good and deep.. $135 a corner!

PS tigger73 I got those Audi rims! They look fantastic. Thanks so much for your advice on the wheels..

                  • Yeah just have to be a little careful that’s all when there’s brand name tyres going cheap. It can be legitimate and then sometimes you can be buying a 4 year old tyre. Always pays to check first (get it in writing) before handing over your hard earned cash.

Good to hear you picked up the Audi wheels. I think they’re going to look mint on the Tig. Can’t wait to see them fitted up.

If you were really on a budget then I’d give the Kinforest KF550’s a shot only because they have had reasonable reviews.

Though if you can’t get to Tempe you may be able to get another shop price match them on the Goodyear F1A3’s but they’re going to be pushing $1,100 fitted.

                    • Only reason I’m cheaping out on the tyres, I’ve just spent a stack on all the mods, so I need to budget somewhere...

If these tyres are crap next year I’ll get some good ones. Eagles are an option though. I’m just not spending $400+ per corner over it for what is 95% below speed limit driving.

I had the Goodyear F1A2’s (old version) on a couple of cars previously and they were an excellent tyre. They always were up in the top few tyres on the tyre tests. I haven’t run the 3’s yet but from most of the write ups they’re just as good as the 2’s.

The other good thing is that the Goodyear’s had decent tyre life for a performance tyre (~35,000-40,000km). Unlike say Bridgestone S001 which I ran once and was lucky to get 20,000km out of the set.

If you can stretch to it I’d do it. But understand the budget. Tyres is probably not where I’d cut too many corners as it does impact on the drive experience. I can’t wait until I get to replace my Pirelli Scorpion Verde with something a bit more performance oriented. They’re a great tyre for everyday but when you start to push it they lose grip.

Hi REXman, what Audi wheels did you get? I'm still waiting for my car but trying to source 21" SQ5 wheels. Not proving easy.

You should get in touch with agr wheels in Sydney (agr_wheels on eBay). They’ve got a good range of used wheels and in good condition from what I’ve seen. They have the new Audi Rotors too.
