  • Turbo and turbo rattle

Hi Guys, I have the 2019 Tiguan R Line 162 .CHHB engine code.
    1. How can I find out the Turbo I have i.e. IS38 , IS20 etc
    2. I am getting a rattle from the waste gate arm, any thoughts on how to fix this and is there a repair kit with the bush, arm etc. Has anyone else experienced this on the same Tiguan? I have a no code as yet.

You have an IS20 like the Golf GTi. The Tig R and Golf R have IS38's

What make you think you have a rattle in the wastegate arm? What sort of noises are you hearing, I presume while driving?

As above, your car has the IS20 turbo. Its not common to have wastegate rattle on these turbos, are you sure that is what you are hearing?

I think its the coming from the turbo:
        1. If I reach to the back of the engine and tap on the arm, it has play and rattles
        2. While driving maybe in D7 at maybe 80km and then accelerate enough I would hear a rattle
        3. I had a 2008 Audi 2.0T and I had a similar noise and I had to change the turbo.

Could it be something else? If so ......

I think its is a turbo rattle.
          1. What are the other possible reasons?
          2. If I want to move to a IS38, where could I get the software and what could its cost?

As a cheaper and more reliable alternative to the IS38, you may want to consider this:
NSW Brand new Garrett Powermax Stage 1 turbo for MQB based Gen 3 EA888 engines

And yes you will need software to match but many places can offer good quality options for this, such as Underground Performance in Cheltenham.

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure the dealer will not assist unless there is a P0299 fault, or will they?
I see there is a wastegate rattle flapper valve repair kit, that could be a fit.

In my experience with VW dealerships they are a total waste of time, but other people have had luck - i guess it depends on the individual dealership and the people working there.

I assume something like this is what you are referring to: AUDI VW GTI MK7 IS20 Wastegate Rattle Flapper Valve Repair Kit

If you can find a workshop who will fit this part for you, it will cost a fair chunk in labour.

"I assume something like this is what you are referring to: AUDI VW GTI MK7 IS20 Wastegate Rattle Flapper Valve Repair Kit" = Yes this is the kit. I would take it off myself and fit. I think once I run out of Warranty I'll move up to the IS38, I did not realise the cost and what is involved to upgrade to the IS38 software etc.
