  • Test drive cars

I understand that new cars can have up to 50km or sometimes more on odometer on delivery due to trips for accessories installation etc like tint. But I just wondered, with those test drive Tiguans with trade number plates are they sold to customers as new vehicles? I mean technically they are new as they’ve never been registered to an owner.

They should be sold as ex-demo if they've been used for test drives, and disclosed as such.

But is it always disclosed and how can we tell if it had been test driven, especially if odometer can be reset a certain number of times under 100km or something - according to Google. Also it looks like repairs that cost under 3-6% of car price as a result of accidents during transit etc doesn’t need to be disclosed to customers when sold as new.

It’s up to you whether you accept the vehicle. Any more than ~30km and it’s been driven. Over 50km and it’s definitely been a demo.

Many dealers will get the car driven on a flatbed to transport around to avoid the risk of the car being damaged as well as getting km racked up. Probably more reducing the risk of something happening.

It makes sense that they’d normally use the truck to transport the car and if it’s got more than 50km on it I’d be asking questions. But I just wondered, for those test drive cars with trade plates are they going to be sold as demo or new? Obviously they can’t use it for too long for test drive purposes unless they register them and turn them into demos.

I used to work at a Holden dealership about 20 yrs ago. New cars did sometimes get damaged (althought it was pretty rare and only very minor damage) but it was more often than not just a scratched front bumper or a rim coming off the transport trucks. Any of the fancy cars (eg HSV in this case) would have blocks in the front suspension to raise them up for transporting to try and reduce the chance of damaging the bumpers.

We had a good smash repairer literally about 500m away who would repair any damage. This same place was used to paint any 2nd hand cars we were going to sell that needed body work. He would also tart up any ex-police cars (these all got a horrid aftermarket bodykit and replica HSV rims to try and hide the terrible condition they were in - buy always sold super fast as all the bogans wanted the tarted up V6 auto base model Commodore) that we sold.

And my younger brother has spent the past 12 years of so in the auto industry, selling Suzuki, Skoda, Audi and then most recently Lexus. He says its very rare to have a new car damaged but yes it still does happen from time to time.

Well I took mine for a test drive literally straight off the truck. it still had its transport covers on it and they removed some and we drove it round with the bonnet still covered. Had I not bought it, t would have been detailed and sold as new Had about 24km when I took delivery.

At its last service it was taken for a 20 minute "test drive " which I intend to ask about

Nope cafe is across the road It seems a guy got in an fiddled around presumably resetting the service time as per my thread about it being wrong. He then went for the drive without stopping anywhere. Dashcams are marvelous LOL

Also he didnt reset it right and it had to go back again

Looks like there are undriven and unregistered demo vehicles at dealerships to meet their sale targets and get bonuses from manufacturers. I don’t know if VW does it but I’ve come across an article mentioning it’s normal practice but about to change or something.

A demo is normally registered to the dealer and only has remaining warranty time

An UNregistered car is NEW and has full warranty.

Dealers sometimes register them to make figures look good but beware of the above

The Tig I purchased was a Nov 19 build demo registered in Feb this year. It had 23 kms on it when I collected it early May so am guessing it had not been driven except off the boat/truck? 6 weeks later and it's close to 3,000 kms.....
