Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Locking key fob in car

I was under the impression, maybe falsely that you couldnt lock the car with the key inside. I have found that to be incorrect as I left one fob in the centre console and can lock and unlock it with my spare one. I couldnt unlock it with just the one lying in the console.

    Weird or what

Can't say I've tested it, but I can't see why you shouldn't be able to lock the car with the fob inside.
I mean it works on proximity so if you were outside the car then touching the handle sensor should trigger it to unlock.
Ditto for pressing the button on the fob from inside the car.

Maybe it's just weird VW logic?

I have found you can't lock the car using the gestures when the fob is inside the car... took me a good minute to work out why the car wouldn't lock

Sorry but thats possibly not true I left my fob in the console between the seats and didnt see it as i dropped a cloth over it on Thursday . Got out and touched the handle and its been locked ever since. It wouldnt UNLOCK and I had to get the spare fob and have it in my pocket.
Couldnt find my usual one and searched the house and as a last resort looked in the car and there it was.
So I dont know why or how but thats what happened

Mine doesn't lock if the fob is in the car. You can disable that 'safety' feature in OBD 11. Maybe you've done that?

It was one of the things the sales guy made sure I was aware of when showing me the car on pick-up.
He left the key in the boot and then proceeded to lock it...
I was a bit flabbergasted that it didn’t register the key inside the car...

Same. Also can’t auto-close the allspace boot if keys in car.

Edit- I had previously coded ‘enable lock with keys inside’ (or a similarly worded option) but changed my mind.

                      Heres how its done

Two of you go out Driver chucks fob in console gets out wont lock with button on door Wife says hang on and locks it with her fob

IT LOCKS so make sure you bring wife home with you LOL

Just went out to car and did that threw fob in console and locked it with spare fob then had to unlock it with the fob as well.

                      So it will do it

That’s not a true ‘lock car with THE fob stuck inside.’
You locked the car with a fob from OUTSIDE the car. The fact another fob was inside was irrelevant in that process. I would rather the default behaviour (if that’s what you’re describing) didn’t allow any key to be locked in the car, but I can see why it allows it in your scenario.

I wonder if that locked fob is useless until the car is opened and the fob is then taken out of the car. Or could someone smash the window and start the car ‘as is’

It may not be the "True" way but I would have thought that if a fob was inside the car you should NOT be able to lock it by any method and yes if someone got in they probably would be able to simply press the button and bye bye and insurance may look at you a bit funny as a result

I agree if a fob is inside you should not be able to lock it in anyway including how I did it. I only found out by accident as I couldnt find the fob and the car was locked so looking inside was the last option

Can someone try with a locked car, opening just the boot (while key is on your person), then proceeding to throw key into boot and closing the boot.

This could happen for example if your key is in your bag, which you then throw into the boot, before opening unlocking the other doors.

Answer is Door comes down about a foot, tails and indicators flash the town hall clock chimes and the door wont go any further till the fob is removed Then door goes up when you press the button and you have to press again to lower and it locks then.
