  • Power Tailgate Issues

    2018 Tiguan Allspace Comfortline 110TDI

As of yesterday, when the switch is pressed to open the tailgate, either on the door, inside the car or on the remote, the tailgate opens about 10-20cm and then stops. Each subsequent press, opens the tailgate a further 10-20 cm's. After 8-10 presses, it is fully open and the closing buttons do not work. The closing buttons do not work throughout any stage of this opening process.

Tailgate can be closed through forcing it down manually. Then once in the closed position, pressing the switch seems to lock it in place. Sometimes giving off 3-5 long beeps in the process.

Has anyone else had an issue like this before?

Does the tailgate have a collision sensor somewhere on it? It almost seems like it's stopping due to collision or something like that. But doesn't explain why you then cant close it also.

I'll most likely need to take it in for a warranty assessment, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on here before i did that, or if i'm missing anything simple here.

    Thanks!

I have no useful info for a DIY approach, sorry.

Booking it in with your dealer is the answer.
Organise a loan car Too, if you don’t have a second car.

It’ll either be a quick computer reset, or all day ‘diagnosing’ then a re-book to fit whatever part(s) they order in to replace with your part(s). Hence the alternative transport arrangement suggestion.

They don’t ‘fix’ things anymore, just replace.

    Cheers and good luck.

Have you tried resetting it? Open the tailgate all the way - do it manually if required. Press and hold the ‘close’ button on the inside of the bootlid until the car beeps at you (three little chirps).

the same process can be used to program the opening height
      Cheers

Thanks doc_777, will give that a shot and report back.

Have you tried opening/closing the boot with your fob from a distance? If that works then you’ll have isolated the problem to the buttons themselves.

open your tailgate, manually open it fully and it should revert to operating normally. A feature that you can read in the owner's manual.

Unfortunately none of these solutions make a difference. Thank you all for the suggestions. Will report back once I take it in to have it looked at.

Doc777's solution is what it says in the manual except that it says push tailgate up by hand to full extent then hold the left button on the tailgate in until the taillights should flash and the thing will chirp to say its accepted it

Setting it like that seems to respond. Eg I hear the beeps. But the close button still does not work. Then once closing it manually then opening it again. Still only opens 20cm. Then stops. Close button still has no function.

Going to run it up to a dealer now to see if they have any clue. If not, will book it in.

I ran it up to the dealer, they tried most of the solutions here. No result, so have booked it in for warranty.

They said it could be software, or a multitude of electrics that could be the issue. so best to get it in there and have a look.
Supposedly the resetting beeps i was hearing when holding down the button are not the correct beeps either.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. Will update once it's been sorted.

                        Hi Bahgoogen

I'm having very similar issues - did you get anywhere in fixing it and can you please share what they did to the car please?

                        cheers

                          Hi Ed,

They ended up replacing the tailgate latch mechanism. Had to order the part from Sydney (I’m in Melbourne) and I took the car back to get it swapped out.
All good so far.... but I’d hate to have that happen when it’s out of warranty. Hopefully you’re still in yours!

Do you mean one of these? Unfortunately mine is out of warranty

Was the reason behind the replacement that of the latch not sending an open signal to the push button like someone mentioned above?

I trust it has been working OK for a while now?

                            Thanks very much
                            Cheers

                              Hi Ed,

I’m not 100% sure how they diagnosed the latch to be the issue. I know they tried every reset they could including full electrical reset of the car. But to no avail.

My problem was that the tailgate was opening no problem when any of the open buttons were pressed. It just was only opening about a quarter of the way and the stopping. Each subsequent press opened it a little more.

I presume the part that you pictured is the latch that they replaced. How that effects the door from only opening part way, I’m not too sure, as that seemingly just controls the latching on closing and opening.

Sorry I can’t be of much more help.
It has been fine since being replaced in November.
