the bunnings carpentry sticker + grey metallic spray paint did the job (thanks tigger73 for the idea and dutch77 for pointing me in the right direction)
personally, much happier with the look

The painted plug holes look great
What holds the black front plate holder before you took it off ? Plastic Screws ?

They’re little plastic rivets that you can pop off by pushing in the centre. It can be a bit fiddly but if you dent them a bit it doesn’t matter (shouldn’t need a lot of pressure though).
Agree the stickers look great!MY14 MK VII GTI | Pure White | Manual | Bi-Xenons (his)

The other options are using these automotive plastic plugs and painting them with the colour you want. They come in diff shapes and sizes and could be more durable.

There's also a product called "bumper plugs" which come pre-painted in VW colours: BumperPlugs for Volkswagen
Check your paint colour code before ordering. These are a button head plug.

I only posted up so that people can see their options and what is available commercially off-the-shelf.
Personally I'd get some Bunnings dots and a small tin of touch-up paint (or paint pen). It'll work out cheaper and you have touch-up paint for later.

If you only needed one set it would probably work out about line-ball in terms of cost.
But 2 sets it certainly tips in favour of other options.

Yeah, don’t mind about the costs really as it’s not a major factor. If it’s pre-made, matches the paint colour and looks good then it’s an easy & quick solution for sure.

^ plus the bumper plugs have a reputation of poor fitment, which sort of defeats the purpose of a specialised product?!
And the guy who answers the emails has poor customer skills. Just sayin'.

Just thought I would add in case this helps anybody. I removed the clunky black number plate mount from front of my Tig. Very easy but unfortunately I had 4 x 8 mm holes to deal with. I got some plastic plugs from Autobarn for a buck each and painted them up. The plugs had a bigger head than I would have liked and used touch up pens with a sprayed clear coat. White base coat - then metallic top coat before light 1000 grit sand before spraying clear. I went a bit heavy on the metallic coats so I had some sanding thickness, unfortunately this had the effect of making the plugs more silvery than they should be. The fit was not very tight so I used a small dab of hot glue to be sure. Result is quite good and not nearly as ugly as before with my small plate. I have ordered some more plugs that look better from Widgetco in US and will see if I can do better. Cheap as, but postage not. Look like they have a smaller head and hopefully a tighter fit. I will go easier on the metallic next time. I await delivery. Contemplated Bumperplugs but hugely expensive and I didn't want to risk having to drill holes bigger so I can return to stock easily. Hope this helps someone.
