Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ive been tracking them on forums buy and sells etc and they vary from $800-$1200 so id say $1000 budget.

    • The one I got was NEW but it had been tested for 15 minutes on a test motor - which I must admit I was a little dubious about those claims when I bought it. However when I looked at how much carbon build up was in my IS20 when it was removed at 4000klms, it was considerable. Running my finger inside the exhaust inlet on the IS20, my finger ended up being completely blackened - whilst doing the same on the IS38 I bought, there was hardly any carbon at all. So this was a relief, as the IS38 had indeed been hardly used.

I too have seen IS38's being advertised for around your budget, but they do seem to of done considerably extra work.

My brief to Etuners Motorsport was:
Keep it Quiet (but not too quiet)
Keep it within budget (Total spend of $5,000 including IS38 )
Make it SAFE, and then SAFE again, and then finally KEEP IT SAFE
Then outside of that - go for your life.

        The result?
Well when your digital speedo jumps up in increments of 20kph and is struggling to keep up - but then when the car is more than happy to potter around in daily traffic - then you have an amazing SUV.

So I ended up with 228kw, and about 465nm ATW

        So we put in:
BMS drop in filter, and removed the snow grate. No other airbox modifications were done.
        CTS Turbo Inlet
CTS Downpipe with Hi Flow Cat
        IHI IS38 Turbo - New (but had been used) (06K 145 874G)
        Stage 3 Engine Tune
        Matching DSG Tune

I really like dealing with Gordie. He listened to what I wanted, added his advice, but wasn't over the top in his recommendations. He enjoyed the process just as much as I did I reckon - and was over the moon himself at the end result - a true enthusiast.

Thanks for everyone's input so far to help me make the decision making process easier.
Now for planning the next set of mods...........
Well done mate! Great results....is38 is the sweet swap in terms of performance for $.

        I’ll update the front page.

If you get to do any 0-100 runs with draggy or vbox with launch control, post some times.

        • Car's back at the tuners today for the finishing touches.
Eibach springs are being fitted (the correct ones this time!).
Custom CNC'd pendulum mount is being fitted to the Racingline dogbone insert.
Stage 3 tuning is being tweaked.

            Sounds like an exciting day.
Where did you get your Eibach's from? Considering you had to swap them over, I am assuming locally somewhere.

            • Imported from tunershop.co.uk. Much cheaper than sourcing locally, even with shipping.

                          • The mods are done.
I'm a little confused on the final figure when I look at what others have achieved, but nevertheless I'm stoked with how the car has turned out.
The ride height is spot on too, and while firmer it isn't rough. It's perfect.

It turns out when I took the car back the tune had been dialed back to 212awkw. The tuner had tried to explain to me he was reaching for 240+ but kept getting engine knock. I guess in all the excitement I misheard what he was explaining to me and thought it was running at just under 240 with more to come.

Everything checks out, the only way to increase it would be to up the octane I was told, but I'm not going E85. BP98 can be expensive enough as is.

Maybe it's the addition of the oil cooler, maybe it's the oil catch can?

I also suspect their dyno isn't very forgiving. When my R36 had a stage 1 it read close to 20awkw less than some others were getting.

                            • Beedub, how it drives is the most important thing - and unless you are going to be timing quarter miles or 0-100 shootouts, then figures are just figures. Lets face it, on your graph you are losing your license before you even reach 200kw.

I love the look of it with the Eibachs on, it looks just awesome now - glad I listened to you and ordered a set. However Tunershop are out of stock for 6 weeks, you must of got the last set - mongrel.
