Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

A quick PSA for you lot, I'd suspected my dipped beam headlights (auto xenon variant) were too low for about 6 months, as whenever I drove at night, I could see in front of me, but never ahead of me.

Last week I took it back to the dealer as it's still under warranty, and they took a look, and noticed it was in fact too low. They played it off as a minor adjustment, however, the difference is night and day (pun intended). If you suspect your lights are too low, take it to your dealer to get it sorted.

Can anyone confirm when I adjust the Allen key to adjust the screws that the car needs to be in service mode via a Vcds or it will reset?

Having zero vw knowledge, take this with a grain of salt.

Every car I’ve worked on with this system doesn’t actually ‘know’ where the headlights are actually aiming.

It has just been programmed to respond to a Hall effect sensor position on one of the rear suspension arms/shocks and the body, making adjustments to a baseline figure. So when the rear of the car is squatting down(passengers, luggage, trailer, the headlight moves accordingly. There could be a level sensor on the body, to allow for things like flat tyres too.

In either system, If you manually adjust the headlights this will mean the baseline figure has been changed too.

The only way the car could readjust after a manual change, would be if the sensor was actually sensing the position of the headlight housing. This would have to be insanely accurate and expensive(above and beyond the already pricey led lights)

The fact there is a manual adjustment, tells me this isn’t the case.

Happy to be wrong and learn a new system(as I said I’m new to vw)

        Cheers.

The only time I have had self levelling headlights (Skoda) reset was after an accident and that was done by putting it in the VW diagnostic system.

                Any update on this moose?
I’ve thought mine possibly are abit low and always have been. Anything I can do prior to booking it in to get looked at so I know if I’m wasting my time or not beforehand?

is it just me that i feel that the headlights tend to readjust so it doesn't shine directly on the cars in front by angling it just below the other car's windscreen

Fairly certain that it’s just simply lateral automatic adjustments

The led headlights have active matrix high beam. It’s amazing. Creates localised ‘shadows’ around oncoming and cars you’re following, while maintaining high beam above and to both sides(if relevant) to the object they’re avoiding. Moves smooth and with a pretty fast ‘refresh rate’ too. I’m very impressed.

Not all cars have this, there are two different headlight assemblies and they both have different capabilities.

                          Do non-highlines have ‘non-active’ leds?

I didn’t know that we had all the headlight options in aus. Overseas I did.

We had no headlight options up until recently, One assembly is capable of HBA - Headlight Beam Assist - and has a less powerful high beam and the other is capable of DLA - Dynamic Light Assist - which has a more powerful high beam and the moving pattern referred to above. I have no idea of which cars have what in the current line up.

This is not true . If you have highline which have full led headlights with motor dynamic cornering LED( someone call these headlights matrix but is not ,as Audi use matrix with no moving motor parts in) excluding Tiguan Sportline and Adventure which use also LED headlight but are not full led headlight . Highline Full LED it is DLA capable, however first generation come In AU by factory disabled for Australia. This is tricky but can be activated with special factory vw toll including coding and software, . New AU Tiguans sold as MY18.5 and MY19 should have factor enabled DLA functions .

I have a highline Allspace. The led lights both move(whole assembly, I’m assuming, like my last car) and selectively create various shapes/sizes shadow areas within any point of the beam pattern, that changes as needs dictate.

                                What is this called?
