So sounds like you'll keep the current diff in place. I've read there's a few different gear ratios out there when it come to Amarok diffs. Have you used you're diff lock much and with the 2wd when does it disengage? Guessing it has a speed it unlocks for 'safety' haha!
The donor Amarok does have a diff that locks in the rear too, so that will be available eventually. I will use the gear surround switches from the donor as it has everything I need including the switch for the rear diff lock. So, the switch from Big Red and the rear diff from the donor will likely be up at some point.

Use the diff lock when accelerating hard and it auto disengages at 80km/h (I think). On light offroading such as dirt tracks it worked really well too. Was a worthwhile upgrade I think.

Anybody have any idea how to clean/restore a dirty exterior on any of these drive train parts? Want to either get them nice and shiny OEM metallic or clean and painted black.

All parts will get a thorough functional restoration as well before fitting.

Dry ice blasting makes the parts look new again.

Thanks Lucas, that looks promising. From Google, the machines are definitely too expensive to buy for what I need, so will get all the stuff I want cleaned, ready and then get the closest local cleaner to come out and do them all at once.

          • Yes its not a DIY type of process unfortunately, but its become very popular in recent years and plenty of places offer it now.

              Thanks mate 👍
PM me when you decide to sell the diff, i'm in melb but i'm sure we can work something out.
With the rear diff have you looked into gear ratios? From what i've found our 2wds run 4.3 and the 4x4 run 4.1.

              • Presumably lower diff ratio and therefore lower final ratios on 4x4 are better for crawling up obstacles as oppose to the 2wd would have greater benefit from a higher diff ratio, reducing rpm at higher speeds and improving fuel economy or possibly increasing top speeds.

                • Yeah but as far as I understand it's the other way round, so the 2wd petrol has the highest gearing and therefore shortest gears.

Which is why my stock gearbox is going in for an upgrade. It has a broken 3rd gear synchro anyway, so sending it in for a longer 1st and 2nd second plus all round syncho replacement to make them stronger. Have a specialist gearbox place in Brisbane that does custom builds.

Will be using the donor's gearbox whilst that is being done.

Ah got it, i do remember you writing that now.
So my issue will be trying to find a factory locked petrol diff with the 4.3 ratio or trying to find an aftermarket e-locking or trutrak center to convert my current diff.
There's an ARB air locker center for sale at the minute for $600 but I don't want to have to run a compressor to actuate it etc.

The 2WD diesels also ran the same diff as the TSI, might be a few more of those around.

I will be doing a full build thread on this as somebody may find it useful.

                          Some teasers though ...

Definitely not my photos; I'd suggest using a different browser/app if photos are a problem for you.
