  • 2012 amarok turbo noise on cold driving [emoji3544]

2012 VW amarok 2.0L tdi bi turbo

Symptoms: on first drive of the day, cold engine. Change out of first gear and can hear a very loud screech from the engine.after that driving around can’t hear the screech again until the engine is cold.

[emoji3544]Possible cause: I think it could be the turbo turbine contacting the casing because of too much freeplay.[emoji3544]

-the larger turbo turbine has slight amount of freeplay. I’m not sure if this enough to make this type of noise though.

How do I know what turbo it is ?

Wish I had a microphone kit so I could put a sensor mic at each turbo.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with the amarok engines ? Engine code CDCA

Are you sure that its not your accessory belt slipping. Perhaps its old/damaged/lost tension. If its the original belt from 2012 when the car was built then its definitely a possibility. Old or loose belts make a horrible squeal.

I very much doubt its a turbo issue like you have described. All turbos have a small amount of shaft play - its normal and this is where the oil moves around the shaft of the turbo when the engine is running.

      I thought that too

Although to me it seems like a metallic noise perhaps rotational.and proportional to boost.

But very good point I will investigate further the drive belt and thanks for shedding light on this issue [emoji736][emoji736]

      Keep you all updated

As you can see, I’ve tried to take a photo. The drive belt seems fine, condition is ok. The tension is ok. I’ll try drive the amarok again and focus on the noise but I think it sounds like metal to metal contact

The belt looks ok from what can be seen in that photo, just make sure that there are no cracks in the ridges or other damage.

How long does the noise last? Apart from the noise, does the vehicle still drive ok and does it seem to still have full power? No interruption in power when the noise happens?

The turbos run a pretty tight tolerance but the turbine and compressor wheels should never be touching the housings, regardless of whether they are hot or cold. If the turbo fails and the wheels touch the compressor housings it will make a horrible noise and of course there will be reduction in power and blue smoke out the back of the exhaust pipe.

It might be time to take it to your mechanic to look over the vehicle.

Has the car had any work done to it recently which might be related, or has this just come out of the blue?

It does it 1 time Per drive cycle and always when cold.

Drove it again tonight- possibly does sound like the drive belt.

Ok it shouldn’t be either turbo then. I’m sure the turbine contacting would be very obvious and loud. And see some smoke.

See how I go tomorrow when I check the drive belt tension and take it for a drive again listening more closely

Alright replaced the drive belt and the noise has been reduced but not 100%.

The drive belt was cracked and slightly damaged on the edges.

The drive belt tensioner seems to move a little while at idle. Perhaps it’s faulty also.

I have found the AC compressor clutch pulley rubber is damaged so it’s sheared the rubber pulley off. Maybe this is the noise I can hear.

Post photos when I get access to this AC compressor [emoji598]

Great, another sheared AC compressor pulley.

                  New compressor

Hopefully this is the squealing noise I’m hearing [emoji346][emoji346][emoji346]

I feel like these AC compressors seize when the system doesn’t get used for a while and not lubricated.. eg... in cold climates or winter [emoji23]

                    Just to update everyone

                    The noise is still happening,

Definitely sounds like RH side, and a high pitched squeal when changing into 3rd year on cold engine.

                    My suspicion is turbo noise...
