Those with enough knowledge how the computers work, also know that the computers incl these in your car like the engine and transmission ECU also log any abnormalities together with other data and just because you don't see them with your scanner/code reader, it doesn't mean that the logs aren't there.
I wasn't trying to be deceptive, so apologies if it came across that way. That said, I am by no means the first (in fact I'm waaaaayyyyy down the queue) person to make that statement. Apart from bang-for-buck it's arguably the biggest reason people go for these units and that fact is mentioned in almost every thread you'll find discussing the JB1. I also intentionally said "very difficult". I'm an engineer. I work with aviation control systems. I know full well there are other ways to tell things have been done so I was never going to say "impossible".

Honest question: Can you please provide technical evidence / facts that the piggy-box is indeed detectable and in which way (which blocks/values are the ones that reveal it, where and when this has happened etc.) by a dealer scan or you are just posting your speculation based on "enough computer knowledge" (which is true a few of us might also possess).

There's been plenty of discussions and explanations in other forums as to why the box is invisible to such scans, which is why people that had warranty claims (while being piggy-back users) got them through without any problems and as of today, the same remains true. This is not the case with ecu remaps and it is also known that people had warranty claims rejected when remaps were detected. This is the single most important piggy-back advantage to traditional remaps.

I was actually quite surprised to read your post until I noticed the "performance tuning from $660" in your signature which obviously explains a lot.

      • If you check out the JB1 threads elsewhere on the internet (USA Forums) you'll see it's the same story. Not a single warranty claim has ever been denied to a JB1 user (Except when they didn't remove it before a service! Fail.)

The thing dealers and VW are looking for are the flags, especially a TD1. The JB1 does not create a TD1 on the scan.

Even in that case, the only argument would be the (visual) discovery of some external device connected to the ECU which is a fail for sure. Unless they open the bonnet, you can have a dealer scanning your car all day long with the JB1 still connected and there is no possible way to detect anything (this is just how the system works, there's no flash counter as with remaps for example). In fact I think that this has been tested by someone with a mod-friendly dealer just to see what would happen, and... nothing. As if the unit was not there. Many threads on many forums about how and why (talking about the JB1 in specific).

          • Assume it makes no difference though i mistakenly copied another users order. Ive updated my car details in the previous post , should be Octavia RS162.
            Thanks

              • For those ordering the JB1 here is how I seated my unit you may find this useful I think plug 'A' at the rear is no longer necessary. I used 'Hook and Loop Adjustable Tape' to tie the cable at shown in the photo. It will be necessary to remove the lower engine cover to get to plug 'D' best use ramps or a hoist, don't jack up the car and crawl under without stand supports.

                • Given the rig morale associated with installation what are you guys are planning to do when you are getting vehicle serviced? Remove or leaving connected?

I will be removing it. It's only 30mins a year to limit any kind of awkward conversations.

Ditto this. Otherwise better to get an ecu tune and run the warranty gauntlet perhaps.

Once a year to pull the belly pan and crawl under the car is not a big deal. Was sufficient for me to justify buying one if those convertible work stool/garage crawlers from supercheap... 😄

It's easy to remove just had my 15K service took it off a few days before and put it back the day after. It will take an hour if you take your time. For the power transformation it's a minor task once a year in my case.

                        • Anyone know a place in Sydney that you could rent a hoist, so that I can get quick and easy access to underneath the engine bay.

                          • I think most guys here are over thinking it here... install is super easy. Invest in some low profile ramps or drive one side of the car on the kerb which will give enough crawl space to get under.
