Passat R36, I saw this caradvice news today too.

Volkswagen Australia is going forward with Drive Away Pricing for all it's vehicles.

I applaude their decision to use Drive Away Pricing for its transparency, because it avoids confusion and straight out dishonesty by dealers.

With Drive Away Pricing at least you know where your negotiations begin.

This Clearance Sale Pricing of the MY20 range applies until 30 September 2019.

So the MK8 Golf range is possibly a year away, and later still for the MK8 Golf GTI and R, maybe a year after that?

it's great, one of the reasons I bought a MK7.5 R rather than a MK7. i would be good to be able to move the dials to where you prefer but this is not offered. i love it and wouldn't go back.

VW Germany has reconsidered our Australian Climate and were no longer considered a Hot Climate so can get the full Euro tune and extra Kw's?

Will VW Aust allow owners to upgrade their newly purchased cars?

I doubt they'll do that. Unless VW in Germany authorise it.

So how do we the Australian owners lobby VW in Germany, direct or through VW Australia?

Hi Folks,
So we did the first 400 ks in the R wagon and the BP fuel for 98RON was 145.9 per liter.

Filled up and averaged 10 liters per 100 s. So did I expect easy 5's like the Polo Gti. no! Pretty good for a new car, run in period where I first warm the engine and DSG up before driving it hard!

One thing we both noticed is the leather on the steering wheel, while it is high quality, does not match our old 2008 Polo Gti perforated leather wheel.

The other thing I noticed is the peel in the paint finish is too noticable for my liking. Not a deal breaker but all factory finishers could do better.

The Nav is much much better than the Subaru Forrester.

Still have yet to read through the Hand Book. Should be interesting.

I've also got lots of "orange peel" in the paint on my Oryx White wagon. I instructed my detailer to go easy on the the polishing as I didn't want to lose too much clear coat. I did find a final layer of Lustre improved the gloss quite a bit.

I love the Boring Pure White after the Black Magic Gti!

Oh another observation is the Floor Mats that came with the R are inferior quality to the 2008 Gti floor mats.

Yeah, not a lot really wrong with a Golf R wagon Wolfsburg. Not to say I couldn't suggest some improvements, but the overall package is pretty good (and so it should be at the money VW asks for them).

I put some "rubber" (more plastic) floor mats by 3D in mine, as I sometimes get in with muddy boots.

I noted that keeping it in 'S' increase stationary RPMs by 300 to above 1000RPM at idle, so essentially any driving in Sport mode would easily add .5-1L/100

I like the steering wheel feel but I too think it might not still be like that after a year or so

I'm not sure what you regard as "cost effective", but I bought mine for $149 + $15 shipping from trufitcarpets on ebay, but they no longer have a current listing for these. I was happy with the quality and see them as good value as 18 months later they are still going strong.

Edit: Looks like 3D are only making rubber mats for Amaroks these days, none for Mk 7 Golfs anymore (according to their website, anyway)

I noticed the D versus R and prefer to let it idle in D then when I take off pull back to R for take off.

In D the DSG takes off in D2 but in S mode it takes off in S1. You are taking care to run the R in?

Ben T posted his running in routine. I agree it's a good way to run it in.

My running in procedure has always been to get the boost up but not redline it for the first 1500, and use manual mode so it doesn’t cruise around at minimum revs either. Worked well for my 1.4 Polo GTI which used no oil whatsoever.

Is the Gav you mentioned from Underground Performance? If so, he services my VWs.

it has crept up to redline a few times but I quickly lift of or shift up a gear. I don't hold it up at the redline for any period of time.
in the daily commute there is enough variation in driving between stop start and constant speed. When I get bored I do a few pulls but to be honest, i've gone way to quick without paying attention to the speedo.
Do we know why in sport it idles at 1000/1250Rpm?

I have never had an oil temperature gauge before so I turned it on out of interest. [On the infotainment screen press Menu/Vehicle/ Selection (in the lower LH corner) / Sport]. I bet you would never guess those steps! If necessary press an arrow to show the instruments instead of the Lap Time display or, If necessary, swipe an instrument up (or down) to show the Oil Temp .

When I went for a drive it took ages to register a temperature, but eventually it got up to show 100 degrees C. At that temp. It dawned on me that is the boiling point of water (at normal atmospheric pressure). Therefore I thought that if I keep the oil above that (since the oil pressure will be raising the boiling point ….. correct me if I’m wrong) the water in the oil, which forms normally from condensation, will boil off. That’s a good thing as the water rots the engine metal. Also, measuring your dipstick oil level will show actual oil and not oil+water. If you are anal you could measure your oil before and after driving oil at 100 degrees plus and get an idea about how cruel you are being to oil with short cold trips.

I am red hot on water in the oil because 50 years ago when I was more ignorant I wore out a brand new car engine in 2 years because (despite oil changes by the book) I drove 300 metres from cold every morning and the car sat there all day except for the odd delivery some days.. Then 300 metres (not MILES or KM) back home where it sat overnight. I was always puzzled by stuff like mayonnaise inside the oil-filler cap doh!
