  • Dutch77, how timely you are to have posted another desirable RAYS wheel for our consumption. Ever since StephenR posted his query re the RAYS Volk Racing G25, I haven't stopped thinking about this magnificent lump of lightweight forged alloy.

After making enquiries through two of Avdo's recommended suppliers, Tyrepower Hawthorn and Perfectrun JP in Sydney, I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger and ordering a set of Mercury Silver 19x8 ET48's from the owners Micky and Sam at Tyrepower Hawthorn, who have been fantastic to deal with. While these wheels come standard with a matching centre caps and chrome metal valve, centric hub rings and conical seat bolts do not, but they are readily available in a complete kit, which also includes a long socket adapter, similar to a spark plug socket.

While Perfectrun were also good to deal with, replying to my emails in a matter of hours, the charges are complicated because the transaction is primarily in Yen, and the customer will be responsible for paying the shipper, DHL Express the following: customs duty, GST and admin fees charged by Australian Customs and DHL.

For those who have any doubt about the benefit of forged wheels, they are up to 300 times stronger than ordinary cast wheels, and are up to 8lbs lighter in an 18x8 inch size of the wheels I'm interested in. You know the guy who owns it or just happened to see it around? Nice photo location, and I have a bias to graphite on red.

I am thinking I should really open a VWW wheel shop..

My initial reaction to Rays was no, but seeing some great examples of their wheels on both Mk6 and now Mk7 GTIs I am definitely a big fan and would consider a set for myself. Maybe when I get bored with the OZs.. although I would love a set of BBS CH-Rs or LMs, something about BBS on a German car.

If someone could just find a sensible lowering solution that doesn't compromise the comfort of the Mk7 ride!

Have you considered Eibach at all, I had a set on my HSV VXR Astra and they were great. Ride comfort was great with that lowered look.
        Just food for thought

Yeah if I was going springs only then Eibach would definitely be on the shortlist. Trouble is everyone has a different interpretation of what's comfortable v firm, and the old 'feels like stock' comment rarely is close to the mark. Hopefully we start to see some more Mk7s doing some suspension work and getting some reviews up online.

Not a dodgy transmission but part of Vossen's new range. While this offset is a stretch without work in Australia, there are friendlier 19 x 8.5 ET45s in the range, a range that goes up to 22 x 10.5 in size. Interestingly Vossen cast this wheel so that both sides of the car rotate the same direction. The 19s can be had for around $2,000 USD excluding freight, duties and taxes.

Note: not a legal fitment in Australia

A pretty decent alternative for those who want a 17 inch branded wheel, found in the UK and landed here for around $1,500 AUD including freight, duties and taxes. These are available in black and silver and larger sizes as well.

An OEM five spoke option available both in the above specs and also a smaller 17 x 7.5 ET50. The smaller size can be bought online new from Germany and the USA but freight, duties and taxes probably push these out to around $1,400-$1,500. The 18 inch seem a bit harder to find, best bet on both wheels would be an eBay or forum purchase. Anyway this is this thread's nod to the World Cup.

Interesting color scheme, but a classic old school wheel.

The E30 was probably the first car I really desired growing up (I was never a Lambo on the wall kid) and had an idea of a black one with gold BBS a la the John Player Special cars.

My first car then turned out to be a Mitsubishi Sigma - with factory alloys!

The new range on that link isn't bad, they've borrowed a few European looking designs. The Spyder has a bit of an S3 feel to it; the Evolution is your standard y spoke mesh etc. I think the biggest issue will be fitment - their only 5x112 PCDs are in their light truck/van range.
