Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Maybe the stock ran up the mountain and the tune went down.

I'd have no doubt a tuned Mk7 GTI could pull 5.8s, but a stock GTI should be in the 6s unless the car or conditions are terrible.

    • New Golf GTI fitted with Bridgestone S001 Tyres

A guy at work has just taken delivery of a late MY2014 manufactured standard GTI, which I was surprised to see fitted with Bridgestone S001 tyres, instead of the previous generation A050A. What do people think about this change? While neither tyre is highly rated, it always miffs me when auto manufacturers fit older generation tyres at production. At least now, the current version is supplied, which I think should always be the case.

Seriously, many auto manufacturers do this, even Aston Martin, which results in tyre makers having to also supply the retail/after-market for customers who require replacements, either because of damage or end-of-life. In my view, when a tyre is superseded, it should be phased out slowly at the retail/after-market level. This can't be achieved when tyre makers continue to supply auto manufacturers. Apart from the odd exception, there is rarely a case where the previous generation of tyre is better than the updated model, so why are auto manufacturers continuing to fit them? Are tyre makers happy to maintain two sets of manufacturing plant/molds for years to maintain this practice?

          • Just stirring Mikey.

I agree, tyres should be upgraded over time as the tyre manufacturers update. I'd guess that there are significant discounts in taking large batches of older stock which in an industry which specialises in taking savings wherever possible means the consumer can sometimes lose out.

I won't even ask why you know about issues with Aston Martin rubber..

            • That image looks familiar. Rick Harrison hates being on the wrong end of a bad deal, but hates it even more if Corey goes and buys anything expensive without his permission (eg. speed boat and hot air baloon).

I knew you were kidding, but this subject is a pet issue for me. I used to think that auto manufacturers must get a better deal when buying older tyre models, not old stock as the tyres are current production, but surely they call the shots with tyre makers with their huge buying power. Tyre makers love the marketing hype, and boast the connection of tyre models with prestige car brands/models. They definitely share the same bed, so the consumer ultimately has to accept whatever tyre brand/model is supplied.

Aston Martin also fit Bridgestone RE050A's to their Vantage models, so this issue has no pricing boundaries.

Random/unrelated question, man do you find the rims on the PP hard to clean. God I spend like ages trying to clean inbetween the spokes. #sadface

Get one of these brushes or something similar

                  And this cleaner

Spray the cleaner wait till it turns purple.
Then a quick in and out of each spoke hole and then spray with the hose or pressure cleaner to rinse. A few more in and outs if it has been a while since the last clean.

Approx 1 min of work for each wheel + 2-3 mins waiting time for each wheel for the cleaner to do its magic.

5-10 mins in total for all 4 wheels if you time the cleaning and waiting time correctly.

If you do it every week then you usually don't need to use the brush at all. Just the cleaner.

You can also buy the clean in 5L container. Works out cheaper than some of the cheap brands at supercheapauto when you buy in bulk.

Okay... You got me. I'm really lazy with washing my car, and especially it was cold in the winter. I got it washed by people every week or two. [emoji15] the people I go to actually do a better job at washing my than myself. 25 dollars (I supply them with the shampoo) and no scratch so far. Oh and my tyres/wheels look brand spanking new everytime I go.

Where do you keep these people? Could be more time & cost effective than doing my own washes with a pro detail a few times a year.

                      btw Great taste in cars

Yes the Santiagos are a royal pain to clean - especially the glossy black bits.
On a positive note - the MK7 seems to have fixed the MK6 issue of every door seal holding water until you open the door.

                          • Do anyone have any recommendations for seat covers to suit the GTI, in particular throw over ones?
Need to fit something during the week while driving the car to and from work
