      Hi all,
Do you guys notice a strange electric burning / gunpowder like smell outside your car after a bit of a spirited drive?

My GTI is pretty new (approx 1000km) and when I say spirited drive I don't mean redlining shifts. It's just quick acceleration up to the speed limit with shifts at no more then 4k rpm with some fast cornering.

The only time I notice it is after I get home in the small confines of the garage. It's hard to describe but the first time it happened I thought it smelt like a firecracker had gone off. The second time it was a bit of that and almost electrical like. There is a faint hum of a motor - probably cooling something down. There are no warning lights at all on the dash and everything sounds and feels normal.

Next time it happens I will pop the hood to have a look. Hopefully I won't see anything on fire.

Edit: it only seems to last for a minute or two then it's gone.

      • I noticed a burning smell as well, I'm at close to 3k and I don't smell it anymore. I think it's just adhesives/oils that are just burning away lol.

Hmmm, another question, do you guys notice these suction cup marks (circular marks) on the inside of the windscreen/rear windscreen when it fogs up on the inside?

*edit: apparently it's due to how they install the windscreen via suction cups: VW Rabbit Forum " Large Suction Cup Mark on Windshield?" Volkswagen Rabbit Owners Club

Probably gonna try cleaning it harder the next time, doesn't appear unless there's fog on the inside so no biggie.

          .
Ah so it goes away after awhile. Or you've gotten used to the smell.

That's normal for the first couple of thousand kms. As components get hot, they begin to burn off the grease and lubricants / excess sealant that covers them during manufacture and assembly. Once it's happened a few times you won't notice it again.

                  • Gee Top Gear last night couldn't stop raving about the LSD in the new GTI PP. They were blown away by its performance on the wet track.

                      • I get the smell a bit too. 850km on the clock now, the smell isn't as strong as it was but it's still there

                        • Quick question. Are manual GTI's selling at a premium at the moment down here in Melbourne?

I was offered a GTI (white, manual) on Friday for $46,628

Given that according to the VW website the RRP for this car is $41,990 was the salesman trying me on or are on-road costs more than I think?

                          • On roads are more than you think I suspect - same car in SA clocks in at $46,393 in manual guise and no options.

Keep in mind discounts can be had, so shop around, and don't be afraid to look interstate if need be.

A minor smell after today's VWW cruise but nothing significant, almost 600km now.
