Axle tramp is not a problem with the Mk7 GTI, and really shouldn't affect anyone's purchasing decision. It simply hasn't come up in the multitude of tests I've read, and I've not seen any protracted discussion about it in the hundreds of pages of owner comments I've also read.

As I mentioned in response to your post in the other thread, there wasn't an inherent problem with axle tramp in the mk6 either, and it depends on vehicle specifics, conditions and technique as to whether it's a problem for you or not.

Any high-powered front-wheel-drive car can experience axle tramp (badly) if the circumstances are right (wrong?) and you are sufficiently ham-fisted in your launch technique. In all honesty, if it's a big problem for you and tyres/suspension/environment are all okay in your estimation, then an AWD car would probably suit you better.

    • GTI will always be a faster car and probably easier to live with long term. Plus the GTI is German built whereas A3 is from Hungry. Personally, you only buy Audi for the badge, but if you really want that, then the Merc A class or BMW 1 series would be a better bet for resale, servicing, reliability etc. And the three pointed star or blue and white propeller has far more badge kudos that the 4 rings (case in point, all real estate agents in my area drive a Merc or BMW and they are the most image conscious people on the planet)

I only hear horror stories of Audi's breaking down costing a fortune.

      • I would suggest that putting a dog bone insert into the rubber section of the under car dog bone might cure the feeling of tramp. I think the feeling you are getting is the engine rocking back and forth hard on the soft dog bone rubber (has big gaps in it for NVH which will bounce lots should you be putting a time of torque through the motor and breaking a bit of traction).

        • Yes, I've never really had any axle tramp since fitting a Whiteline insert into my car. You start off feeling some vibration but it beds in nicely. I now only notice vibrations when I reverse uphill.

          • Thanks all for your comments. Not too keen on the insert - I think I would prefer to have lower NVH levels all the time and put up with the occassional axle tramp, not the other way round. That's why I went for the GTI, as opposed to more hard core / focused sports cars.

Byrcem, hope your Mk7 GTI doesn't have the same trait. Would love to find out, please let me know!

Adam, I've replied to your other thread (MK6 v MK7: Golf GTI), so won't repeat again here.

                • Ordered GTI With Performance Pk.

I ordered early January the GTI with driver Assist, roof racks and Performance Pk 52.25k delivery is not till mid May. And nothing on the VW website about the Performance Pk.
Was also looking at the S3 Audi the salesmen said the Performance Pk was already in country but VW wasn't launching it till May?
Has anyone been given a different delivery date?

Completely agree! The camera is shocking! Mercedes simply hide it within the 3 pointed star grill emblem. You'd never know it was there.
The VW camera sticks out like a sore thumb and as it's not a smooth surface around the lens I can't even imagine how much road muck will get trapped on and around it, soon impeding its function. It's also very low down making it more vulnerable to road debris.
The Audi's camera looks to be a much better design but I haven't had a close look yet.
Still think the Merc has the best design.
Dad is picking up his S3 next week. Looks absolutely stunning. There really is a quantum leap in the new MQB platform over the Mk 6 VW. Dad trading in his Golf R. Bastard.

                    • At the same time the Mercedes often continued to crash into the car in front when the VW and Volvo didn't in a Fifth Gear TV test last year

                      • I picked up my gti on Friday and I'm a happy man - like a boy with a new toy! It's a sensational car. The steering and roadholding are sensational, the power incredible, the quality is remarkable and the fun factor is mind blowing. Its lower than I expected and looks amazing (white with tinted windows and sunroof). The sound brings such a smile especially when it turns down a gear! I really like so many features such as how the xenons dance on startup and how I can control the stop start depending on the pressure I put on the brake. The few shortfalls such as the low res screen and navigation that can't pronounce road names are far outweighed by the more important factors such as drive ability and confidence behind the wheel. I'm too nervous to test the front driver assist so have no idea if it works and there seems to be no way to connect an ipod apart from via Bluetooth but I might be wrong. The sunroof doesn't open nearly as much as I was expecting as it looks so big (probably the same if not less than a regular sunroof) but it's absolutely fine for me. For all of you waiting, it's worth it and you're in for a treat. I have to chuckle each time a fellow gti driver goes past and notices the new model! I'm really pleased with my decision of getting the GTI.

Not sure if you have had a sunroof before, but when you open the roof to the max setting it only opens to the default auto setting. If you want it completely open you can turn or pull the open button more after it is open at the max auto setting, this will open the roof fully. Hope it makes sense.
I see you have the driver assist package, how does the front sensor look? Does it look as bad In real life as the pictures show?

I don't get why people don't comment on it much. They must not think it looks that bad, the look of the GTI is bloody hot and the sensor ruins it. Surly the VW designers would have seen how unpleasing it looks and could have come up with a better looking design??
Ahh well, nothing we can do about it as I still want it. I'm sure I will get used to it.

This is something i've noticed too. From the general public my car gets very little attention (and TBH, i'm happy with that). Other GTI owners on the other hand... I've seen SO MANY mk6 GTI owners lose their marbles when i come up behind them in traffic etc.. Gives me a little chuckle, probably similar to me driving my old mk5 GTI when the mk6 was new.

                              • Hi Guys

Can someone recommend a place in Brisbane to take my GTI in for service.

I've done over 6K in just 3 months so would like someone to have a look over it for me.

                                I'm at East Brisbane area.

                                Thanks in advanced.
