Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • It is highly unlikely you will achieve the figures quoted by the manufacturer for fuel consumption for any vehicle.. They are not achieved in actual urban or highway driving but on a dynamometer on a defined speed/load cycle that is supposed to "equate" to such driving.

Even with cruise control on a freeway with little undulation, you will be extremely lucky to get close to the figures quoted by the manufacturer.

One suggestion is to use the web site www.fuelly.com and use it to track and map your fuel consumption. Over a period of time you will see how things vary and what a realistic number is.

OTOH, if you hang out in the Skoda section you'll find most drivers getting the manufacturers figure or better. VW group vehicles seem pretty good in this regard once they are run-in (5,000km+). I average 6.7L/100km & factory claim was 7.6L/100km. Once I hit the suburbs it's about 8L/100km.

Buddy03: How many km have you done & do you do lots of short trips (<10km)?

Yes I do a lot of <10km trips and a 60km trip once a week. Even in my 60km trip the car averages about 7.8L/100km.

I've only done about 300km, still using the fuel tank from the dealership. I've only had the car for couple of weeks.

Maybe I need to let the car run in for a while more before considering the petrol consumption.

        • scroll thru the MFD menu and Im sure you will see your average speed is low....I have approx. 700kms on the clock in my 90tsi and the average speed is 20km/h. This is a indication of why my fuel economy isnt soo great ! It maybe the reason for you too.

Increase that average speed to 80 or 90km/h (ie lots of highway) and your fuel economy will drop right down into nice 5-6l/100km territory.

I'm a mild driver so it's a bit disappointing as I was expecting closer to 6.5L/100km for city driving as per the specifications.

Anyone with 103tsi experiencing the same or is there something wrong with my car?

The short trips will kill your fuel consumption as the engine isn't really getting hot enough to reach optimum efficiency. I know when I'm on home duties I try & walk or ride as the short trips are like owning a V8.

My engine didn't start to free up until ~3000km & continued to improve right through to 15,000km. I would recomend you drive without even thinking about fuel economy until 3000km. Possibly go for a few drives in the country - maybe up Macquarie Pass or The Old Pacific Hwy, Mt Ousley Rd, etc. Somewhere with either a steep hill or lots of curves so you have to slow down then accelerate smoothly.

edit: re: what Benjamin says. My avg spd is ~40kmh & that's with 80km of hwy driving most days

            • anyone getting pinging / pinking in the 90TSI ? We are using 95 RON and I didnt think this could be such a contributing factor.

Noticed it amplified off barriers etc , when loading the engine - from 1500-2000 rpm or so.

              • It's the waste gate rattle, I've got the same problem and so do a few others. Bloody annoying and ridiculous that a brand new car has such an issue. VW Australia have ETA of mid July for the clip to arrive. You should go to your dealer and tell them about it, the more people who bring it to their attention, the quicker they will act on it.

Makes sense, cheers for the heads up. I recall (sic) this on the transporter or polo ?

I'll be onto the dealer tomorrow.

                        • Has anyone noticed the indicators not cancelling themselves when turning corners? It's a bit random with ours but I have found myself driving along with the indicator still on a few times. I pressume this isn't somehting programmable?

mate i thought id just update for you and others

Took the car to VW - wet day so plenty of road noise. They couldnt hear it but i will leave the car in there in a couple of weeks to fix some other stuff.
Just to explain the noise - it is a rattling once you back off full throttle to partial throttle. It is quite loud - and im convinced it is the wastegate. No noise when constant acceleration but as you partially back off you will get the woosh from the DV/wastegate and a pinging rattle noise as well. Lets hope they can hear it next time
