Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

My tinter took off the door and window trim when applying the window tinting. I'll post a shot of the rear window over the next few days

On a totally different matter, I have just been told that VW will shortly release a "software patch" to enable Voice Control on MK7 highline cars in australia. On a prevous post, I noted that this function doesn't work in my car (103TSI). It has been suggested to me (by a reasonably reliable source) that no Golf mk7 highlines released in Australia have this function operational (despite VW's brochure saying that voice control is standard on highline models). Does anyone who owns a Golf Mk7 Highline have voice control operating on their car?
My highline doesn't have voice control. More of a niggle that it was published, but the dealer just tried to blame shift when queried, rather than just apologise for the misleading brochure. Have queried VWA as a result. Don't have a response yet.

All good the back window came good it just had a funny look around the edges and I did some research and it's cause of the dot matrix on the glass

Since Saturday it has all set and looks 100% so I'm happy with tint a car

        • Is there a way to retrofit the Discover Pro system? I'm told there are no plans in the near future to offer this directly to the Australian market (which means a *downgrade* on the RNS510) - I had a loaner Mark 7 for a day and concluded that the new display was rubbish. Also disappointed to see the lack of premium audio options available.

Has anybody heard when these features may be coming, if at all?

            bc:
I started my original inquiry with VWA (about Voice Control on my Highline) about two months ago and I had the support of the dealer where I bought my Golf when I approached VWA. Got a call from VWA last week and their advice is that they are testing a fix from VW Germany for the problem. In typical VWA fashion, they couldn't tell me when their testing regime would finish, so I waiting for it to be released.

I have absolutely no idea why VWA needs to "test" the fix that VW Germany has developed to solve this problem (maybe VWA are concerned that software patches that originate in the Northern Hemisphere are likely to fail in the Southern Hemisphere). Anyway, I am waiting for VWA to tell my dealer that the fix is officially released. If you hear anything, please share
Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the wider expertise of other forum members! Thank you.

I sent an email to VWA regarding voice control. This is the email response that I received.

Thank you for your e-mail. We do apologise for the delay in response.

In regards to the voice control in your vehicle, it is not able to be connected.

It was originally advertised before the release of the car, however these brochures should have been pulled off the shelves in our dealers.

It has instructions in your user manual, this is because it is a generic manual also for our European models.

The Volkswagen factory did not include the function in our models that were ordered for our market.

We currently are developing a way to install it as an accessory function with our cars, however there is a little way to go before it is available in the market.

              We do apologise for this.

              Kindest Regards

              • Hmm, sounds dodgy, could have sworn it was one bit to change in provisioning in mk6.

                • Question for you all. Dealer said the new base Golf I picked up didn't need to be run in at all. "Feel free to take it to the red line" he said, "the engine has already been run-in at the factory before installation".

Is this true of new cars these days, or is he fibbing/has no idea what he's saying?

I'm taking it for a long drive into country NSW this weekend, and would love to be able to use the cruise control.

                    personally i wont go over 3k rpm...for the 1st 1000km.
people also say dont exceed 5k rpm during 1000-2000km. and do whatever you want after 2500kmm
but this is really controversy, just like new mobile phone batteries...

                    • 3K is nearly impossible to avoid, and actually silly, because you will put more strain on the engine trying to drive it in higher gears(to avoid revving) than just letting it freely rev. Just don't rev the tits off it at full throttle all the time for about 1000km and you should be fine. Avoiding full throttle in a turbo car will avoid big boost, which will reduce the potential for troubles in a minimally worn in engine.

sorry for being silly...just learnt a lesson.
but what i found is my passat usually goes around between 1-3k, sometimes 3k+, and rarely 4k. maybe im too soft on the throttle.

                        • The dsg in auto mode does that I suppose, but what if you need to just slightly push it to get up a hill, much better to rev in 4th than strain at 2.5K in 6th up there.

I would refer to the owners manual in the first instance, rather than the salesperson.

If it were my car, I wouldn't purposely use full throttle or take the engine to the redline if I didn't have to (during break-in).

Irrespective of whether you engage cruise control or not, you should aim to vary the engine speed and load, as this promotes a more uniform wear surface between the piston ring and cylinder wall.

The engine will have been run on a bench for a few minutes when first built, to perform the initial bed-in and check everything is working correctly. Whilst it's better than nothing, this is not a dyno run-in by any means.

Which is where the many and varied opinions ref run-in technique come in.
