Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

My 2016 Golf R Wolfsburg Wagon now has the same issue, 5yr warranty expired 3 months ago - I've contacted VW to request goodwill replacement, so finger's crossed!

And yes it's needed occasional coolant topups in the past 18 months, so probably an existing issue that's just gotten worse - and no doubt ignored by the dealer at the service 12 months ago!

I didnt think the 5 year warranty was offered until sometime in late 2019? How does your 2016 model have a 5 year warranty?

I paid $1499 extra for the privilege (according to the invoice, but as part of negotiating it ended up being about $1000 more). As someone who had a DSG box replaced under warranty, I figured it was worth it! And in hindsight should have had a mechanic check the car before warranty expired in Feb.

        • Hi everyone,, I've just got my 16' Golf R Manual last month and it's been a blast, however just been considering getting it serviced, I had the oil changed as the dealer didn't use the correct one (was hitting 105-110c oil temps, now it gets to 100 max).

          - What is the going rate for a water pump change in Melbourne? I've been quoted $1400 from a tuning workshop
          - I've got 60,000km, should I get the Haldex serviced soon?
          - I've full de-badged the car, but kind of want the side R badges back, is there a place to get them cheap?

          Thanks

The water pump is about $630 in parts and then about 4 hours labour, so I would have thought your quote was about right. Might be worth ringing around a few other VW specialists to get some other quotes though just to be sure.

Definitely look at your service history and check whether the Haldex has been serviced. VW only specifies that the oil is changed, but there is a little screen filter that clogs up with metal filings that should also be removed, cleaned and refitted. I have seen heaps of photos of Haldex cars with 30-40,000km on them and this filter is already full of debris.

As for R badges, just look on ebay. You will find both genuine and Chinese replicas and you choose whichever you want based on what you are willing to spend.

The gauze filter on the end of my Haldex pump was pretty gungey at only 16,000Km, so mine will be getting cleaned every second annual service.

              • Gee there are crazy asking prices out there for demo or used 7.5 R's...

                • Straw poll as an owner of a Golf R 7.5 I'm wondering what the path is to my next car or do I keep the R, Golf 8 R no doubt a step up performance and evolution wise but some of the interior technology needs a work over possible in the first upgrade 2-3 years out and it's going to cost. Await the ID R which is sure to lift the bar yet again in a different direction but no doubt will be a cracker with all the technology available within the VW Group to wit Porsche Audi R&D. Stick with the current R which is still a fantastic car and I don't have to spend a cent more or even upgrade my current R, what is the thinking out there?

                  • IMO, stick with your R, await developments in EVs and charging infrastructure and see what is the best option for your circumstances in 3-5 years time.

Thanks, was advised not to replace the water pump unless it was leaking.

Ended up getting the oil changed (previous owner got it changed at Kmart/Mycar in May, completely wrong oil used) + haldex service, there was some gunk in the screen filter, have definitely felt the rear engage more in some full throttle applications.

Now I'm just waiting on clutch to go so I can upgrade it and get a stage 1

Of course, would be silly to spend $1k+ on something that hasnt broken yet. The waterpump on mine is leaking a tiny little bit, im just keeping an eye on it and will replace it when the time comes.

                          • Besides the MIB2 radio, is there anything significant that an MY16 car has over an earlier MY14/15 one? I plan to do a MIB2.5 retrofit at some stage, so the easier to upgrade, the better.

I'm specifically on the lookout for a stock tornado red or candy white DSG R with low kms.
