Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Yep - 3 scrapes already and I hardly drive the thing. They haven't even lowered the R by an inch, so it shows how low the tolerances are these days. But I'm already re-learning to automatically drive out over sus looking driveways at an angle again.

Glad I'm not alone! However, it's a sign of how awesome my car is that I even care - years ago I wouldn't have even bothered to look. To the poster who has ordered the fully optioned R to replace the Subaru, you will never look back.

I adjusted my front wheels to 40 PSI today, they were probably a bit low at 36 PSI, but yeah you're right, have to learn to drive dodgy driveways again. Good first world problem to have.

Surprinsgly no. I've had my car since Australia Day and no scrapes yet! I've learned to turn my steering wheel full lock when going up/down my driveway.

This works most of the time but sometimes the lowered stance of the R means a scrape. I am positively OCD about caring for this and still scrape on some occasions regardless. I have accepted that I will be having the lower chin spoiler removed for repainting from time to time. I still prefer this as a positive consequence of a lower ride height that enhances the drive every time every day. Definitely a first world problem... 👍

          • Yep, we all learn to drive the angles and hopefully avoid any annoying scraping sounds.
But the large turning circle is harder to get used to.
Is the turning circle of an R the same as other Mk 7 golfs ?
Turing circle is nowhere near as tight as my fondly remembered V6 4Mo Bora.
            Current : 2017 Mk7 Golf R (most options) || 2012 Golf Mk6 TDi (few options)
Gone : 2004 Bora V6 4Motion (few klms, all options)

Official specs seem to list all variants from TSI to R as 10.9m

              • Has anyone thought about adding an Oettinger kit to their R? I’d be interested to hear opinions on these kits. I’ve been a fan of these for a while but not really gone further than admiring. What’s the cost?

There’s a thread about them on the forum here somewhere. Quite expensive as I understand. I think those details were in the same thread too. Folks good at the forum search function may be able to assist locate that thread

                    Thanks. I’ll search for it.

                      • Hey all,

I've gpt a 2014 R fully optioned. Had an error come up in the display "Bend Lighting (AFS) failure" which means the little cornering lamps in the headlights are out. I think they are H7 but before I replace them can anyone recommend an alternative that throws a cleaner, whiter, light as the standard kit doesn't seem appropriate with HID and LED DRLs...

                        thanks

Great question. I’m keen to hear suggestions as well as have often thought that was an oversight in the OEM kit

                          • Took out a Grid R wagon yesterday (was doing a back to back with a M140i) and tbh, for the price its pretty good value. I'm quite keen on the leather interior but the digital dash I could take or leave.

Given they're advertising demos for 50k driveaway atm, has anyone gotten lower for a no frills R?

                            • Exhaust Burble Problems

Love the exhaust burbles on overrun (7.5R) but notice burbles disappear then reappear (car is always in race/sport mode).

Got car back from dealer who put car in individual mode and immediately noticed burbles in sport mode which wasn't there for a while prior. When switching back to race they seem to stay around the disappear after a while. Putting it back to individual seems to 'reset' things.

                              Thoughts?

I noticed once there wasn't many soon after startup, but they increased once the operating temp was reached. There's obviously a very different fuel profile for a cold motor - maybe they save the overdosing for when the thing's warm. Might make sense ?
