Is this your first R? I'm pretty sure you are describing the exhaust popping on the over run. It did cause me brief concern when I first noticed it on the Mk 6, but now I try to do it as often as I can.
In the Mk 6 it only seems to happen in first and second and the revs need to be coming down from just over 3000 rpm. I think I remember someone saying about the exhaust valve opening under these conditions which makes it all louder.
    Hey Paul R,

Definitely not the crackle and pop on the over run, if it was that I wouldn't be complaining cos I love that sound.
This is really more like a low frequency humm / drone. Kinda like when only one person opens a window in the car when you're driving and you get buffeting. Similar to that.

    • Not really that concerned about it, just calling it out since someone else did.

I definitely know what you mean by this, and a very accurate description, I originally thought one of the rear windows were open as it sounded like that sort of drumming noise.

Hahaha, yeah me too. It's because the car in D holds gear to 6th and 5th despite the fact that the car is now doing 40km/h. If you downshift with the paddles to a more appropriate gear the drone is significantly less evident.

Yeah I guess it is exhaust Drone. To put it simply, that's exactly what it is.

              • Thanks for the replies guys - yes it is exhaust drone/ drumming for sure and it seems most of us have it. I change down also but that only eases the drumming until the revs drop again to 1600 - 1400rpm. I find the noise a bit annoying - maybe it may ease as the car gets a few more kms on. Maybe not!
What about the motor vibration through the seat and steering wheel at 100 - 110kph in 6th, even just at cruising, neutral throttle but more evident if you are accelerating slightly - maybe I am over sensitive but I can feel it.

                • A Prius would be an excellent quiet noiseless car for those complaining about exhaust drone

The R exhaust is loud for stock standard, drone is expected although i would say minimal.

                    • just giving some info... when you drive your car in eco mode don't get scared if the cornering lights are not working, they are disable when you drive in that mode. I almost went back to the dealer to ask, but fortunately I read the manual before.

Both static and fixed cornering lights....must be to save fuel.

I find that a bit funny, myself.
