Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I assume your insurer walks away from these track days?

Yeah, usually you're not covered but I'm not talking about head-to-head racing, just punting around a track within you and your car's limits - where appropriate. I've driven at Sandown and Winton and you'd really have to pushing hard to come anywhere near a wall. Plenty of places where you can exceed the speed limit by a long way, which is getting back to the original comment about autobarns.

Took it down to Stanwell tops and back through the national park last night. Corners very nicely and accelerates out of corners with heaps of grip.

Pity you can't really open up the throttle in this country. We need an autobahn type highway between here and melbourne / brisbane I reckon!!
You could come up to Brisbane for a holiday and attend one of our happy laps sessions for $35.

How did you find the car with ESC off? None of the reviews have really gone into any detail about the drive with ESC off, however I think it was Autocar that said it's still virtually impossible to get the R tail-happy even with the ESC off.

yes, but unless you go with real racing (head to head like the V, Timeattack track days are very safe and the number of cars on the track at any one time is limited. you hardly get into contact with other cars.

the general people perception of track days is mostly ugly, car trashing and breaking activities and prone to crash and write off... etc. basically for most people, cars that have been on track are dead cars. imo this is not right, well maintained cars (I changed my oil 8 times within 25,000km), always looked after, driven hard only when up to operating temp, should not fare worse than those driven on the twisties and only serviced once year.

in fact, in my opinion well managed track days with limited number of cars are probably THE BEST activity you can do in this country without killing any animals on the road (well insects still present) / without loosing your licence / without any unexpected third party suddenly crossing your lane. basically it is a controlled environment where you can go at your own pace.

the potential dangers are only created by exceeding your driving and car abilities or lack of common sense / experience / training.

Not sure as to why they couldnt as i found the car to have a massive amount of grip but when pushed hard once the tyres were warm mid point in a corner i was able to get the rear out and hold the slide when i tried quite easily(only did a couple of times as i didnt want to destroy my tyres 2 weeks after having the car). This could be due to the heat and multiple cars running different tyres on a semi clean racetrack.

Only take it to proper track days. Powercruise is very good for this as you are speed limited to 140km/hr around the track, which is fast enough for hidden valley in a stock car, then you line up and race others down the pit straight from barricade to another barricade which at hidden valley is around 5-600m where i was reaching 200-210km/hr (youtube it).

If you crashed on the road and it was proven you were excessively speed they can walk away too.

                              • I managed to get a brief 10 minute test drive in a Golf R this morning. Feels like a well sorted car with good power but I wasn't blown away by the quality of the interior and it wasn't as potent as I had expected - maybe it's a little too civilised after getting out of my Mk6 GTI with APR exhaust + tune. Just didn't have the power delivery that I'm used to. Maybe because it was a demo car with only a few thousand kms on the clock, dunno. Got the usual story about low stock, next delivery not until December, etc. It took a lot of talking to get a test drive and he admitted they get a lot of tyre kickers with the new R. I'm in no hurry so I think I'll go back mid-week for a proper test drive.
