Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I've rung 3 dealers (in Sydney), all of whom can deliver a fully specced R within a fortnight, however the best I've had is halve the dealer delivery from one, free rego and CTP from another, and no discount at all from the third. I'm not approaching them as a tyre kicker either, I have willingly said I will leave a non-refundable deposit over the phone if they can give me a deal I'm happy with.

Are the two who posted amazing prices an anomaly (I note both had previous relationships with the dealer), or am I just crap at bargaining?
Many dealers are treating their limited launch stock of Golf R's like hens teeth, and therefore want top dollar for them. They don't realise this strategy just pushes customers to other dealers or worse, other makes.

The two forum members who received incredible deals had 3 key elements in their favour:
    1. The dealerships had an open mind/fair play sales policy and were prepared to negotiate.
    2. They were repeat customers of either the sales staff member or dealership, the former is probably more important.
    3. They were corporate program customers, which meant Volkswagen Group Australia made a contribution of at least $1,000 to the dealership for each contract.

Don't give up. Perhaps, you should ask for a contract for a custom built car, which will have far less dealer margin implications in the short term. Of course, you'll have to wait months for your car, but good things come to those who wait.

The new Golf Performance Range brochure states something a little different on page 24:

      02. Driver Assistance Package (not pictured)
If you want the extra reassurance and safety offered by Volkswagen’s most advanced technologies,
the Driver Assistance Package adds Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Assist with City

      †Not available on Golf R

This omission comes as no surprise to Golf R Mk6 owners, as Park Assist 1 was omitted in their models when it was available as an option in lessor versions.

Fortunately, Volkswagen Group Australia has seen fit to reduce the Driver Assistance Package by $300, which at least compensates customers for this omission, that many think is just a gimmick anyway.

Mate, you really need to show your face in person. This makes the biggest difference, for both parties. You can ascertain how serious they are to do business with you and they too can see how willing you are to sign a contract should the price be right for you, or how willing you are to walk out the door should they not meet your needs.

Give it a go. I always like doing it in person. gives you a small sense of power! You are the boss - remember, they're working for you!

        • ^ I got one of the great prices, Mikey1 correctly pointed out the 3 things in my favor, the biggest factor was corporate plus pricing which was surprisingly generous I thought (but reflects the competitive marketplace). Then my dealer went over and above (I did mention other good prices being achieved which always "sharpens" the dealers minds and lets them know you are well informed/gives the dealer something to beat Very happy with my $58.5k price of course (some have been getting loaded GTI PP's for not a lot less). My R is just about to dock in Oz so should have it in a few weeks (must be a decent 2nd wave of R's coming through on this boat, don't have specific details as yet).

          • Don't forget that you always get a better price in the last few days of the month if they haven't met their quota. You can usually tell the moment you walk in whether this is the case - either lots of energy from the staff or they're kicking back with no real purpose, happy to take the sale next month.

This didn't work for me. I even had a pre-order with a dealer who I thought I had a good relationship with, but when I went in to discuss actual pricing to finalise my contract, that's when things fell apart. I was presented with two pricing options: one with and one without corporate program, neither of which contained any dealer discount of substance. Their excuse, management gobbledegook that the model was brand new, in limited supply and interest/orders were coming in thick and fast, so there was no need to discount, even for custom builds 5 months in advance. I walked out in disgust! Fortunately, I had a back-up plan.

                • Maybe the dealers are trying to make up for the severe discounts they gave last year when they were in the news with dodgy powertrains and buyers were harder to find.

Can I recommend a dealer for those looking for an R in Melbourne? VW in Moorabbin (Bayside) has a salesman called Cal who is an absolute gentleman. Was recommended by someone else on this forum. I found him to be exactly as they said. Very helpful and genuine. Can't recommend Cal enough.

I gave Cal 3 chances. Never heard back from him. Even tho Bayside Barloworld is where I got my mk6 from.

Found the actual dealer who sold me the mk6 at barloworld - who now works at South Yarra - Tom. He jumped thru every hoop to get my business. Top notch. Go see Tom - tell him Koe sent ya!

I don't think disclosing this information would be helpful, as my circumstances will be different to others. Suffice to say, I'm grateful to Koe (see below post), who referred me to Thomas.

                        • I finally went in to test drive the R this morning, hoping to finalise the deal for my pre-ordered (paid $1k refundable deposit) Blue with all the 3 main options. Like what mikey1 said, that's when it fell apart. There was no offer of discount or whatsoever, not even on the dealer delivery or corporate plan, and I was told that I can reduce the price by taking an option or two off, but I'll have to wait till Nivember for the second batch as ppl are 'supposedly' lining up to take mine off my hands should I withdraw...

Needless to say what happened next.
