How though? Isn't the Golf GTI with PP is at $48k? So people buy a GTI with PP or spend an extra $2k on an Golf R? So I still see it closer to the $55k mark.

Australian product placement and market location will either see the MK7 R at 55-57k for a base model. The smart money would be to spend on the S3...

^ Agree Hail22, it's hard to go past the base S3 (adding the PP a pretty impressive premium option for those so inclined)

I got 3year service ($1500) in my deal. In my mind I have paid $66.5 for an S3 with PP, met paint, roof rails, MMI cable and extra rubber mats front/back/boot.

Was that on road? Or was that before the $8.5k odd of on road charges and dealer delivery?

Guys, im still a bit lost at everyone talking about the Audi prices.... have you guys actually tried to buy one for $60k?

Don't get me wrong, i thought the same thing so went into the dealer during "Open Haus" Feb to buy one when the on roads for free. The cheapest i was walking out of their with a base model with no metallic paint was $64.5k (RRP $66.5k). With performance pack I was at $70k.

That was from 2 separate dealers, under "corporate pricing".

Now either im just unlucky with Audi dealers or the prices being thrown around are based off numbers prior to any dealer or on road charges.. or perhaps its just when I select the options I want the price increases dramatically. If the difference was $2-$3k then I would have got the Audi. However, im apparently getting a fully spec'd R for under $65k on road (lets see...). And my quote, on a similar spec S3 (with ski port, sunroof, magnetic ride, B&O, roof rails) was $79k. Even without the sound and the roof rails it would have been $75k. That's $10k difference for the same car...

Im not trying to argue here, im just trying to work out where I went wrong with the Audi.

I see where you are coming from but $57k makes it more than the S3 once you put DSG and leather on it.

I would be surprised if that were the case.

I think you just went to the wrong dealers and wrong salesmen. The prices quoted by guys on the forums are also all drive away prices.

When I ordered our car, the factory by mistake made it straight away rather than as a 2014 build. I saw this car advertised by my dealer on carsales the other day as a demo for 74k drive away. I can tell you that I'm picking up my 2014 s3 for 68k drive away. Specs are PP, assistance package and exterior mirror package.

If you don't land a good salesman willing to get your business by giving you the best price, then you probably "went wrong". Not your fault of course. Just bad luck.

Anyway best of luck with your R. Still an excellent car and you get bigger wheels

Yes, they basically give you the manufacturer recommended pricing at first, then maybe knock $2000 or so off, some people will jump at that, but if you can use what others have been able achieve, most are willing to match that price.

That was a pretty good deal you got there sameatworld, I paid approx $5k more, but ours is a sedan ($2k) with crystal effect paint ($1200) and also ticked the privacy glass ($800) and tinted windows ($300). But saying that, it's still cheaper than that demo car you mentioned at $74k.

That would put a fully loaded R with DSG on road at around $65k retail, which means it should be possible to get one discounted to something around the $60-61k mark.

That seems to still leave the $8-10k odd gap to S3?

(I've excluded any LCT, I'm assuming this is still coming in under the fuel efficient threshold?).

The lack of specific options for the R (Nappa leather, Discover Pro 8", Dynaudio, Pretoria rims) is potentially a deal-breaker for me Miro. My father's going the S3 route, and I may well end up doing the same. Although I really do like the R look. I just wish I could spec it right!

Add leather to the R ($3150) and MRC (active dampers, $1600) to the S3 to get them to an equivalent (or, rather, as close as possible) spec, and the price difference is under $4,000. Considering the prestige of the Audi brand in Australia, and the higher specification of the S3 overall, that's an awfully narrow price margin we're talking here.

Agreed, although the dealer delivery variance does add to that gap somewhat (although I am basing this on what people are posting on the S3 v what appears on my GTI invoice).

If the gap ended up being $5k like most I'd be tempted to jump in the S3 over the R, or adding a bit more and going that sedan which just looks so right to me.
