Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Just got quoted $76,800 for a manual S3 sedan ($3000 up on the hatch) with S Pack (but they'll give me 18s as the sedan S Pack has 19s but the hatch 18s), metallic paint and Driver assist. Drop the driver assist, metallic and the bigger boot equals about $72,000 for the hatch. The R with leather (and heated seats) will need to be well short of $70,000 for me to take it. The regular A3 sedan looks fantastic.

The sales guy reckons the sedan wheels are a different offset to the hatch. Anyone know better?

Our drive away price for our S3 sedan is $73500 (we were going to wait for the Golf R, but once we saw the A3 sedan, it sealed the deal).

      Specs are:

      S3 sedan with S tronic
Crystal effect paint - Sepang blue.
      S performance package
      Drive assist package
      Folding mirrors package
      Privacy glass
      Tinted windows

And we qualify for corp discount which equates to the first 3 years free service.

I will endeavour to scan it, and more than happy to share, plus the dealership was more than happy to match quotes that fellow forum members obtained.

      • ^ ouch. I've got a preliminary 62k for a white base S3 SB inc tint. Think the base which is pretty well loaded presents the best value- the PP and other options shoot the price up quickly!

        • $68k, S3 metallic paint, PP, roof rails, 3 year free service, set of rubber mats (inc. boot) and MMI cable. Got better tint myself ($375 Solarstyle). Year of free car washing. I think the base offers the cheapest entry price, each to their own.

          • $68k for SB with PP, assistance package, exterior mirror, non metallic paint and 3yrs free service.

If getting the new R, I would go for manual in standard trim which should make it much cheaper than an s3

            • Does that make a Black DSG Golf R with leather, sunroof, driver assist for say $62k drive-away worthwhile without free servicing when you can get an S3 with PP and 3 yrs free servicing? assuming one qualifies for the Audi corporate discount.

But at launch with all 3 options and minimal if any discounts it could be $66k-$67k for the R in which case I may as well go for the S3 with PP since the magnetic ride and B&O speakers would cancel out the sunroof and D.A. for me.

Until you obtain the best price for the configuration you require from VW and Audi, it's pure speculation which is better value. Also, based on reviews in Germany and the UK, the Golf R appears to have excellent dynamic credentials. Past history of VW and Audi models having similar underpinninngs suggests the VW version is dynamically better and cheaper to purchase. The fact that Audi dropped the S3 price by $10K and offers corporate pricing is the prime cause of prospective buyers being unsure what to do.

                • ^ Indeed Mikey. Much will rest on the R's pricing, too close for comfort (assuming you need to add leather to the base R, which on a premium car I believe is a must) and things get very interesting...

                    • I was pretty sure I was just going to get a basic manual S3, as a step up from the R, but the more I follow this thread, I think a manual Golf R may end up in the garage yet.

                      • I find it funny how this thread has turned into a S3 thread. So it should, the S3 is simply a bargain. I think VW will be climbing a steep hill going by early indications.

It doesn't hit my G-spot in the slightest! Golf wagons have been poor sellers in the past, especially the Mk6. The R36 wagon flew the R wagon flag proudly for VW, but VW has ruined the Passat with old man ultra conservative styling, so resurrecting the R in the new model will probably never happen, which probably explains the Golf R wagon experiment.

                            • So anyone get pricing on a fully loaded R yet? Roof/leather/driver assist/DSG.
Pricing with the VW corporate discount?
I'm leaning towards limestone grey this time around.

Only seeing two exhaust pipes instead of the four on the hatch... not sure how legit this actually is... but would be awesome if it was!
