(All overseas prices inclusive of local taxes.) While it's annoying the standard system has such a low resolution display (240 x 400 pixels), to thumb your nose just because of this would be silly. At least find half a dozen other reasons...
Given what my RNS-510 is capable of, it looks terrible and I'm picky about that stuff. The first thing I do, assuming VWA hasn't released this unit in Australia, is to do my best to get an aftermarket Discover Nav (~3k) in there and see if I can find a way to get the Columbus maps running on it. Interesting to see that it'll handle iPod integration without the MDI fitting and will play FLAC files natively, too, from SD cards.

If VWA put a $2200 option for the Discover Pro on the pricelists, I would have ticked the hell out of that box hands-down.

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. If VWA launch the R wagon here, my wallet will scream....

    • It shouldn't be that much here anyway. We have Discover Nav as standard already whereas the UK starts from the Discover Media. If it became an option here I therefore think it'd be about A$1k over the standard nav

Sorry Jimi, the prices I quoted for the NZ and UK markets are what customers have to pay to upgrade from Discover Media to Discover Pro. In NZ, the Discover Media is standard, just like it will be here, where as in the UK, Composition Media is standard. In the UK, to upgrade from Composition Media to Discover Media costs GBP 750, but a whopping GBP 1,765 to upgrade to Discover Pro. The only difference between Composition Media and Discover Media is the satnav. In conclusion, Volkswagen AG head office have made this subject so complicated, that Volkswagen Australia have simply specified the Discover Media as the sole specification for Highline, GTI and R models.

          • Dad moved to the new S3 from his R as he was very sick of waiting for the new R and particularly so much speculation about equipment and pricing. TheAudi was a no brainer for him after I read about the price drop of the new model and probably price increase of the new R. Both are magnificent t cars but you certainly get more gear in the S3. The upgrade package is very nice indeed. Having said that I think the VW interior is much nicer to look at because they've simply made the Audi interior too bland, too clean and boring. I don't like the new GTI touch screen and low res but it's certainly easier to operate with a combination of old fashioned buttons as well as the screen rather than the Audi's obsession with removing as many buttons as possible and having to use the paddle thing for the screen.

            • HI guys. Hope you can assist. I have a new R on order and on the wharves. But getting frustrated re lack of pricing info. Seriously thinking about an S3 - ideally a metallic white with performance pack, no sunroof. Would welcome knowing what a negotiated price would be here in NSW, for clarity including gst, etc so a real driveway price for an S3. I have seen some keen prices mentioned but not always clear about driveway price. Also suggestions about which dealers / individuals in them offer good pricing I should speak to. I live lower north shore although dealer location may not matter that much.

              many thanks - Vincent

                • I think the high interest in the S3 this time around is due to the price drop from Audi that has put it within reach of a lot of potential R buyers however.

Interesting to note the S3 suffered a little 'heat exhaustion' in the transmission on the drag strip.

No such problem with a manual. It may be old school, but at least you have total control of what gear you wish to use, and save $2,500+ on an R. Sadly, you save not a cent on the S3. Servicing costs of the DSG are another bother every 60,000kms.

                    • Has anyone received official standards and options list from a dealer yet?

It appears that 19" wheels are standard with only Leather, Roof and Driver Assistance Package as options?

I'd much prefer the 18" wheels - wonder if that is possible?

Thanks for pointing it out Mikey1. Been reading this thread but somehow missed that from you. Cheers.

So for those in Sydney North Shore there's a dealer with two from the batch landing 10/4 that aren't pre-ordered yet. Not sure what specs tho.

                              • No options as of yet but they said i could still change. They only offer 3 options which was leather, sunroof and driver assistance and my reasoning for not choosing any is 'its darwin, u dont need a sunroof, leather is too hot up here and if you need driver assistance with a golf you shouldnt be on the road'.

Ive seen enough reviews from around the world and most of them are saying its better then the s3 and a45 as an overall package. Im also stepping up from a polo GTi so itll be better then that anyway.
