Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Did the same HPSOV, the R is definitely harder edged, angrier and handles better than the S3. There's no doubt VAG has differentiated the 2 siblings with the R the enthusiast choice. (This is reflected in all comparison reviews to date). However with the ACC in comfort or normal it is surprisingly comfortable on rough roads. I've chosen the fun factor, angry, aggressive performance from the R but still with a touch of class

I'm living my fantasies via magazines rather than having driven these cars, but I'm not finding this surprising as similar comments have been made about other vehicles in the Audi range like the S5 and S7, that they're still geared to be softer over hard-edged sports-cars - they leave that for the RS models instead.

I don't think that's a bad thing, and I am certainly not implying the S3 isn't a hugely capable car by the way. But I'd expect an RS3 to head more in the angrier/livelier Golf R route than simply be a powered up S3 with different cosmetics.

I suspect that this is maybe what VW has 'unofficially' done between the GTI and the R this time around as well.

        • Do I see Alcantara seats sekas? If so, please do snap some pics once you get the car. I'm trying to decide whether leather is a worthwhile option. I'm leaning towards no, but I've struggled to find decent pics on line to assist in the decision making process. Interestingly, I was advised that the first round of cars were all delivered with leather; perhaps yours is part of a second batch?

In other news, the R400 has been confirmed for production.

"That wonderful news comes from Car and Driver who received confirmation directly from VW’s R&D boss Heinz-Jakob Neusser."

When VW makes an official press release you will know it is going into production.

            • Hi folks,
I've been trying to compare the weights of the R, GTIPP and S3. I'm struggling to get numbers that I am sure are like for like. Using VW UK and AUS gives different answers and I can only find Audi UK weight for the S3. The UK numbers have the PP a full 125kg lighter than the R but only 45kg ahead of the S3. The standard extras must be the difference. If anyone has better details I'd be interested. Thanks

Sure mate. Just sharing the story FWIW because I thought it would interest people. Perhaps I should have been more careful with my choice of words to save you the trouble of quoting the story. I do applaud your considered use of Italics and Bold though.

                • ^ Looks fantastic Sekas. Lapis Blue FTW My car has docked in Melbourne should have in 2 weeks or so (must have been a 2nd batch of R's just following initial dealer stock).

I've gone for leather, huge step up from cloth, heated seats std with leather are a winner on cold Vic mornings!

Re my great deal, had a few pm's remember corporate pricing got me a long way there then dealer relationship pushed it into sensational territory. Bargain hard peeps!

I can see your problem, and I think comparing like for like across borders will be difficult due to the different spec levels.

The weights I have come across are:

                    GTI PP (DSG) 1364kg (carsales)
                    R (Manual) 1416kg (carsales)
                    R (DSG) 1435kg (carsales)
                    S3 (?) 1395kg (ex USA)

Might need to wait for the S3 to pop up in carsales and see how it is listed there. Normally those figures are for base spec and are usually accurate.

                    • The RVCS website should have accurate and consistent info though I haven't checked the R or S3.

                      • From what I've seen the DSG just about always weighs 20kg more than the equivalent manual

Carsales specs are just pulled from redbook, use their website instead. Its all there, complete with options and their costs too.

My golf 7R owners manual has no mention of the R model. Has any 7R owners received a manual that includes the R variant. thanks Fletch.

I don't think there is a specific Golf R owners manual as it is essentially identical in underpinnings to the GTI.
