I like the 7.5 upgrades but it's not enough for me to chop in my MY16 car for. I'd rather wait another 18 months (end of the lease anyway) and see if the Mk8 cars are nearing release.

MY08 Mk5 GT Sport - sold MY14 Tiguan 118TSI - sold (Mazda3 SP25GT in its place) MY16 Golf 7R: sold (Caterham Super 7 and Hyundai i30N in its place)
I'd like to get the upgraded R. Talked to the dealer today and the Wolfsburg Edition will have the Grey Pretoria rims, Carbon Mirror casings and the driver assistance package in the price and only option will be the sunroof. Colours are white black and blue with the Wolfsburg badge.
Though I think there's got to be more but the dealer may not have all the info.

I'm watching the updated Golf R with a keen eye but if the dealers do not budge on the prices with BS excuse about being new model etc then I'm not interested.

It's a normal sales strategy for a new model, including facelifts and especially pre-launch. If you are an existing customer and/or intend to purchase as a corporate program customer, you may get a better deal early in a model's life. Best wait after the honeymoon period to negotiate a sharper price. If price is really important for you, consider the current model, which will probably be in stock and available for immediate delivery.

I wouldn't expect any real discounts for first few months. When the MK7R first released they wouldn't even do corporate price. I initially ordered GTI PP and only when they agreed to corporate price i swapped order across.
Even now I priced S3 sedan against MK7R on lease and even though on RRP gap of almost 14K the price we could get audi for was only $2500 more in end after Big discount from Audi but not from VW. Hence we ordered the Audi.

Having put down some money for the R 7.5 I am quite prepared to pull out from going through if they start the BS.

Yeah, I wouldn't really count on much discount at first. Oh well, there are plenty of other viable options out there if they won't play ball.
I wouldn't consider the current model either. The tech upgrades in the new model are IMO too significant to settle for the current model. I really do not like the current model's infotainment system.
